At the start of the game, the hero is told that Ortega died after falling into a volcano while battling a dragon. In both remakes Ortega can be revived by reaching the top of [[Zenith Castle]] and wishing for it after defeating [[Divinegon]] within the required amount of turns.
 
The remakes also added a helmet called Ortega's Helmet which could be obtained in [[Mour]], where Ortega spent time recuperating after near death. The helmet protects its wearer from all status ailments.

Ortega was a famous Hero from Aliahan in Dragon Warrior III. He is shown in the intro movie fighting a dragon on top of a volcano, which ends with both of them falling in. He was the father of the legendary Hero Erdrick and when Erdrick was just a baby he left on a quest to destroy Baramos. By Erdricks 16th birthday Ortega was assumed to have failed his quest and Erdrick set out to finish it. After traveling to Alefgard Erdrick found out Ortega had also fallen to Alefgard and had lost his memory. Upon reaching the end of Zoma's castle Erdrick witnessed Ortega's losing battle against the King Hydra.
