The balloon is a vehicle in some Dragon Quest games.

The balloon doesn't show up until almost the very end of the game. After defeating Estark and retrieving the gas canister to a mechanic in Riverton, the party acquires his first prototype balloon. The balloon is necessary to visit the World Tree as well as the Central Island, the site of the endgame.
