The Fright knight is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest VII. It is a heavily armoured skeleton warrior that wields a sword and shield in battle.
Characteristics
Fright knights are large hellish skeletal soldiers adorned in massive teal and magenta armour, wielding a wicked giant sword in battle and a round buckler in the other. These undead fiends are capable of strategically saving their strength for the right time to strike, unleashing their brutal hits when their enemies are at their weakest. The knights also know how to unleash freezing attacks with both their breath and spells, strong enough to cause a serious threat. They can also support their allies by bringing them back from the dead with Zing.

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai
In the 2020 anime series, a fright knight can be seen amongst Hadlar's Dark Army at the end of episode 5.
Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai: A Hero's Bonds
Fright knight first could be faced as a boss in several levels, including Battle Arena: Season 2, Term 2. Its special move is Bitter Blizzard, a powerful ice breath which it unleashes after a 10-second countdown unless it is defeated or interrupted first. It would typically be assisted by other undead monsters, including Mummies and Skeleton soldiers.

Trivia
- The fright knight's original name Niterich and name in Japanese, ナイトリッチ, is intended to be "knight/night lich". Lich is an English word dating back to the 9th century which simply referred to a corpse or dead body. In modern works of fiction, a lich has come to refer to a specific undead creature, a former wizard that seeks to defy death through necromancy. Unlike ordinary zombies, a lich retains some degree of its intelligence and spellcasting abilities. This usage originates from the 1976 Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game booklet Greyhawk, which contained a description of the lich.
