The Coffer of death is a ghastly purple pallet-swap of the Mimic, having been added to the series in the Nintendo 3DS port of the eighth game.

The Coffer of death was added to the game on February 26th, 2021 as an event monster.

A coffer is a synonym for chest, and was used for its similarity to the words _coffin_ and _cough_.
The Japanese name is a bilingual pun, as _gift_ is the German word for poison as well as the English word for present.
