Funghouls are spotted, red-capped mushrooms with stalks thick enough to serve as a face and body. They have stubby arms, small feet, sad, yellow eyes, and a fanged mouth with tongue lolling out. In some spinoff games, the fungi are considered part of the [[Undead family]] as the ''[[Wikipedia:Obake|Obake]]'' (おばけ) in their Japanese name refers to a type of yōkai or ghost in folklore.

Notably in this game, Funghouls have the ability to inflict poison on the party instead of putting them to sleep. This is the only game where they do so.
Funghouls began appearing in Version 5.0 of the game, being encountered in the Netherworld and are quite stronger than their typical early game appearances. As always, they are able to put adventurers to sleep with their familiar Sweet Breath.
These great big gurning mushrooms spring up in their dozens in damp locales. They propogate by putting travellers to sleep and seeding them with their spores

Trivia
The Funghoul's name is a combination of the words "fungi" and "ghoul", a type of demon from pre-Islamic Arabian mythology that is said to feast on corpses. Its name may also be a pun on the often mispronounced Italian curse word "fongool", or "vaffanculo".
