In RPGs, Hit Points (HP) are used as a measurement of a character's life force. The more hit points a character has, the longer they can endure combat.

In Dragon Quest, two stats under character attributes, or status, describe hit points: current HP (shown as HP: ) and maximum HP (shown as Max HP: ). Maximum HP increases as a character levels up after gaining enough experience from battling monsters; current HP decreases as damage is inflicted on the character during combat and is restored by healing magic, herbs, or by staying at an inn.
