Microsoft Windows is a line of operating systems developed by Microsoft. Initially released in 1985, the consumer-grade versions were based on MS-DOS until it switched to the Windows NT kernel, originally designed for high-end workstations and servers. Windows is by far the most popular PC operating system in the world, to the point where "Windows" is synonymous with "PC".
