Not to be confused with Phoenix, the palette swap of the Hades' Condor

The Firebird is a monster in the series.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

The firebird is a large bird with plumage in various shades of red, orange, and yellow. Most of its body is orange with a long red tail, a red head and neck, and golden feathers on its head and neck, as well as gold talons. In battle, it breathes out fiery breath of varying intensity or cast fire magic to cook foes alive. Although the firebird made its debut in Dragon Quest V, it would not make a return to the main series until Dragon Quest X two decades later. Their diet consists of lava and flames. It has made regular appearances in the Monsters of games, as well as various other spinoffs along with its icy counterpart. In some games, it has been a member of the Beast family while in other as a member of the Nature family.

It can be scouted from Lower Level West of the Knightmare Towers at any difficulty, eventually becoming recruitable in the second part of the storyline from Chapter 4, Episode 4: A Night-Time Incident. Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • In the original Japanese, the Firebird is known as ひくいどり (Hi kui dori, lit. Fire-eating bird?), a name which is used to refer to the Southern cassowary, a large flightless bird from Australia and Papua New Guinea in the real world believed to be named due to the red wattle on its neck. Its description in various games even states that firebirds have a diet of lava and fire.
  • Its original English translation, Phoenix, is a sacred immortal bird associated with Greek mythology that cyclically regenerates itself or is born again after bursting into flames. Firebirds are mythological creatures that are found in various cultures across the world.
