Tough cookie
Tough guy (タフネス, Tafunesu?, lit. Toughness) (previously known as タフガイ (Tafu gai, Tough guy?) in Japan) is a personality in the Dragon Quest III remakes. In the Game Boy Color version, it is known as Tough.

In the Dragon Quest III remakes, tough cookie is a personality that improves strength and resilience growth, but reduces agility, wisdom, and luck growth.
At the start of the game, the hero becomes a tough cookie by receiving the final test of character in the forest. Before leaving the test, the hero must push all forty boulders to the old man.
Other party members have a chance to be a tough cookie when scouted at Patty's Party Planning Place, depending on their stat bonuses.

An existing character becomes a tough cookie temporarily while wearing the weightlifter's belt accessory.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake[edit | edit source]
The tough cookie personality increases Strength by 20%, increases Resilience by 30%, decreases Agility by 10%, increases Stamina by 40%, decreases Wisdom by 20%, and decreases Luck by 30%. A character of any vocation can become a tough cookie by equipping a Weightlifter's belt in the primary accessory slot. It is possible to create a character from Patty's Party Planning Place that starts as a tough cookie. However, even by replicating the same method of distributing seeds, it is still possible to end up with a different personality.
