Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. (株式会社スクウェア・エニックス・ホールディングス) is a Japanese corporation mostly known for its many RPGs, such as Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy. Square Enix as it is known now was originally formed on April 1, 2003, from a merger between Enix and Square.
Their main operating company is Square Enix Co., Ltd. (株式会社スクウェア・エニックス), their Japanese offices. They also have their American subsidiary, Square Enix, Inc., and their European subsidiary, Square Enix Ltd.
They also own Taito Corporation.
Before Square Enix[edit | edit source]
Prior to April 2003, Enix and Square were too different independent companies.
Enix Corporation (株式会社エニックス) was founded September 22, 1975 by Yasuhiro Fukushima, originally under the name of Eidansha Boshu Service Center (営団社募集サービスセンター), a publishing company for real estate tabloids. The company was rebranded and renamed to Enix on August 30, 1982, after which it started to get in the gaming business, with Dragon Quest releasing in 1986.
Square Co., Ltd. (株式会社スクウェア) was founded in September 1986 by Masafumi Miyamoto. It was originally operating prior to that as a branch to Masafumi's father's company, Den-Yu-Sha, but became independent later. In 1987, Square released Final Fantasy.
On November 25, 2002, it was announced that Enix and Square would merge to form Square Enix, which got effective a few months later.

- Cloud Strife and Midgar returned in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate which also saw the SSB debut of Heroes of Dragon Quest as playable characters with Yggdrasil's Altar being their home stage. Sephiroth and Northern Cave were also added as DLC, along with Sora and Hollow Bastion.
