For the monster originating in IV that shares the same Japanese name, see Sekerleton
The Mean spirit is a monster that first appeared in Dragon Quest II.
It shares the same Japanese name as the Sekerleton
In the mobile/Switch release of Dragon Quest II, as long as in Dragon Quest Builders 2, this monster was mistakenly named Sekerleton, as both monsters share the same name in Japanese.

These soul-stealing minions of evil may be menacing, but their low defenses lets them down. Beware lone lights in the middle of the night. Smells like mean spirits fishing for friends to ferry to the realm of the dead...

Reappearing from 7.1 onwards, they fight the same way as in IX, but can now cast Whack. Prior to their reappearance, they appeared on the Death Tarot Card alongside a Will-o'-the-whips.

With the 2015 localization of the smart phone version of II, the Mean spirit's name was changed to that of Sekerleton. This lead to confusion, as the name had already been applied to the skeleton in the first Zenithian game. The error arose because the two monsters share the same name in Japanese, being しにがみ, and the team that was assigned to localize II did not notice that the group which adapted IX foresaw this issue and averted it ahead of time.
However, the enemy is once again known as "Sekerleton" in Dragon Quest Builders 2, possibly due to the localizers referencing the English translation of II for enemy names. Curiously, the friendly version of the enemy encountered in the game's final chapter is still referred to as a Mean spirit.
