Crushed Ice is the name of two distinct abilities in the Dragon Quest series. In the main series and the Heroes spinoffs, it is an attack that launches 3-4 strikes on random targets that inflict ice damage.

In Dragon Quest Tact, it is an attack that deals a heavy amount of damage to a single enemy and can decrease their defence.

Appearances

Dragon Quest IX

This ability is learned with 76 skill points allocated into Staff skill. Each strike is 30% of the character's normal blows, stacking for a potential maximum of 120% for 5 MP.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Serena and Jade learn the ability through the Spears section of their character builder, unlocking it for 16 and 18 points respectively. Instead of random targets it now focuses on one target, pulverizing the foe four times at 90% strength for a total of 360% damage. The bone-chilling skill's tremendous improvement comes at a steep cost, requiring 16 MP to perform.

Dragon Quest Tact

Crushed Ice can be learned by Slon the Rook at level 26 and costs 28 MP to use. It inflicts 195% potency physical damage to a single enemy and has a chance to lower their defence shortly.

Etymology

Kachiwari is the Japanese term for crushed ice, which are bite-sized chunks of ice that are used in drinks. Although it shares an English name with the staff and spear skill from the main games, the two skills are not related.
