Lamia
File:Ramia.gif Lamia is the name of the legendary bird in Dragon Quest III. Lamia allows the hero and his party to travel through the air. This was the first occurrence of this mode of travel in the Dragon Quest series. While traveling through the air, there are no random monster encounters.
Hatching Lamia
Lamia's egg is located at a shrine in Liamland. The egg is surrounded by 6 pedestals which are meant to hold the 6 orbs. Once all 6 orbs are in place, Lamia hatches from her egg and is available for the player to use.
Usage
Lamia is necessary to complete the game. Lamia is the only method to access Baramos' Castle, the Pit of Gaia, and the Dragon Queen's Castle which are all game necessary locations.
Limitations
Lamia cannot land anywhere where the party cannot walk. This includes high mountains, water, cities/towns/shrines, and dungeons. Lamia is also not available in Alefgard.
Other appearances
Dragon Quest Monsters 2
Lamia appeared as a rare monster that could be won from a contest run in Nintendo Power.
Dragon Quest VIII
Empyrea explains at the end of Dragon Quest VIII that her actual name is Lamia which means that she might possibly have been searching for Loto after the events of Dragon Quest III. She was named Empyrea by the sages and for some reason did not mention to tell them her actual name.
