The Riptide is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest VIII. It is a fierce, claw-wielding monster that hails from the seas.

Characteristics

Riptides are muscular monsters with pale green skin and green scales covering most of its body, wielding a sharp claw in each hand. The handguards on their claws and their helmets are made of green metal, as well. They wear black kilts with a leather belt around their waists, black boots with orange tips, and a cape of shaggy orange fur around their necks. The seafaring warriors perform corkscrew attacks with their claws that rip into groups of enemies and they can infuse their slashes with lightning, as well. The riptides also have some skill with magic, being able to cast both instant death and healing spells.

Etymology

A riptide is a dangerous current that can carry unwary swimmers out into deep water; the choice of name is probably a hint at this monster's propensity for ripping people up with its claws.
