The Jerkules is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest XI. It is a muscular one-eyed monster with four arms.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Jerkules are muscular, four-armed cyclopes with red skin and dark purple bands on their biceps and upper legs. They have no mouths and wear golden warrior's helmets on their heads. The giants wear very little clothing that consists of a chain harness with a blue crystal orb in the center that they use for blocking attacks, a purple pteruges skirt with a studded belt worn over trunks, metal anklets, and purple cestus gloves on each of their hands. The monsters are obsessed with their own impressive musculature and will show it off to any onlookers in an attempt to mesmerise them. They then viciously beat their opponents to a pulp with their Multifists attack.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • A jerkules is seen in the opening cinematic for Dragon Quest XI fighting against the party inside of Mount Huji.
  • Jerkules's English name comes from a combination of the word jerk, an unpleasant or unlikable person, and Hercules, the Roman equivalent of the Greek divine hero Heracles. Heracles was the son of Zeus and the mortal Alcmene, being famous for his strength and for his many exploits and deeds.
  • The jerkules' Japanese name Megatonkeiru (メガトンケイル) is a combination of the words "mega", which means great, large, or mighty, and Hecatoncheir, a trio of monstrous giants from Greek mythology that each had fifty heads and a hundred arms. Their name literally means "hundred-handed ones".
