The Boppin' badger is a recurring monster in the series, first appearing in Dragon Quest IX. It is based on the mythical tanuki of Japanese folklore.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Boppin' badgers are anthropomorphic badgers that stand on their hind legs, carrying a huge leaf in their right hands. Most of their fur is grey, with darker brown fur around their eyes that give them a masked appearance. Around their necks, they wear a necklace of acorns. The badgers are known for their captivating dancing in battle, attempting to get opponents into the groove as well. The badgers’ pelts are valued for their use in alchemy.

In-game description

Badgers with large leaves and the gift of the groove. Their moves are admired by many in the monster world.

They'd rather be dancing than doing battle, so they beat their bellies like bongos to try and get travellers tapping their toes too.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The monster and the rest of its kin has been changed to badgers in English and most other translations of the game, but they are based on the Japanese raccoon dog, or tanuki (たぬき), that features significantly in folklore and myths. Tanuki is often translated into "badger" or "raccoon" in English, but the two are unrelated animals that share superficially similar appearances.
  • The ponpoko (ポンポコ) in the monster's Japanese name is an onomatopoeia for the sound made by a tanuki beating their round belly drum.[1]
