Averill is an inhabitant of Greedmore Valley, and an optional enemy. He is found in the lake hidden in the forest to the northwest of the valley, being one of many villagers seeking the sage Isaac's treasure said to be at the bottom of the lake. Depending on the player's choices here, the Hero will either fight him - becoming the last man standing after a violent struggle between the villagers for the treasure - or things will be resolved peacefully with him and the other villagers all surviving. In the end, the player must select the peaceful choice to proceed with the game.

Appearance edit

Averill is a poultry man with dark skin, blue eyes and bushy upturned brown eyebrows. He has a moustache and a goatee. He wears an off-white tank top, dull dark blue sweatpants with white laces, and dark grey sneakers with grey soles.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation edit

When the Hero first visits Greedmore Valley and talks to Morgan Gainmore, he will be told to go looking for treasure on his own instead of asking him for help. If the Hero looks around town he will find a cave, the Old Coal Mine, which has a treasure chest at the end containing a note from Morgan saying to come talk to him. Once the Hero tells Morgan of this, he will be offered advice on where treasure can be found but at the cost of 5000 gold. If paid, he will then say that the sage's treasure can be found at the bottom of the lake hidden in the forest to the northwest of town. Note that the player isn't required to do the any of the above to enter this lake, but must have entered Greedmore Valley itself at least once before the game will let the Hero enter the lake.

Once the Hero finds the forest lake northwest of Greedmore, he will then find that he was not the first adventurer to be swindled by the rapacious Morgan. Talking to the villagers there reveals that the villagers can't get to the treasure at the bottom of the water (though some have tried and died in the process), and also that the sage's treasure is of sage Isaac's. One of the villagers says that he would sell his soul if only the lake's water would go away, and then asks if the player if they would do the same. Answer "yes" and the lake water will suddenly start to recede, making the treasure accessible.

At this moment, the player has two choices - the bad choice happens when the Hero talks to the villagers instead of rushing to the treasure. The player will witness the villagers murder each-other in their attempts to be the first to get the treasure. The player will also see demons laughing at the villagers and saying that the Hero should join in as well. After all the villagers have been killed, the player will find Averill to be the last one standing, at which point he will attack you. Beat him and the player will get a scene that implies this is all to Mortamor's liking, and time will "loop" back to when the player first entered the lake all with the villagers still alive so that the player can take a more virtuous path.

The correct choice is to go directly to the treasure chest and open it instead of talking to the villagers. Once the player opens the treasure chest, it will be empty, waking the villagers from their greed-driven bloodlust (with it being implied that this was the real "sage's treasure" that Isaac had let the town inherit all along).
