Buccanham is a kingdom in Dragon Quest VII. The island is located to the southeast of Estard. It is called the Floating City due to its proximity to the sea.

History edit

Past edit

When the party arrives in Buccanham, the city is under lockdown and most of the townspeople are hiding in their homes from monsters. They learn that Alma, the armour seller's wife, has given birth, but no one has seen the newborn yet because a curse placed on the kingdom. The innkeeper is surprised to find travelers that wish to spend the night, and tells the party to ask for the king's permission to do so first. At first, the chancellor discourages them from staying in Buccanham due to the curse, but the king allows them to since the party must be accustomed to monsters by now and they've endured a long journey to get there. The innkeeper agrees to let the party stay for free after receiving permission, but warns them not to go outside under any circumstances after it gets dark. During the night, the party is awakened by a bloodcurdling scream and goes to investigate the cause-a monster in the middle of town terrorising Alma and her husband. Alma refers to the monster as her baby, but it does not recognise its parents and runs away, leaving Alma in tears. According to the Chancellor, the city has been cursed by the Demon King for 5 years now, and on the first night after a full moon, newborns are turned into monsters who then stalk off into the darkness.

Some of the guards and tavern patrons speak of a man named Sharkeye, a pirate who was cursed for daring to fight against the Demon King.[1]Apparently Captain Sharkeye and the King of Buccanham were quite close.[2]If the party speaks to the minstrel on the palace's balcony, the player will witness a flashback to Sharkeye and the crew of the Sea Dragon. The pirate captain has concocted a daring plan to confront the Demon King in a distant corner of the ocean and defeat him once and for all. Lady Anaïs, Sharkeye's beloved, announced the night before that she is carrying Sharkeye's child. The king of Buccanham tries to discourage the captain from enacting his plan to no avail. Sharkeye believes that sooner or later, their kingdom will eventually be swallowed by darkness and believes that he will be victorious over the Demon King, as he has yet to face an enemy he could not best. He asks the king to take care of Anaïs and his unborn child should anything happen to him. The battle ended in defeat for Sharkeye and the crew of the Sea Dragon, leading to them being encased in a block of magical ice for all eternity. The grief of losing her husband causes Anaïs to fall mysteriously ill, and her unborn child to disappear without a trace. The party is moved by the tale and heads off to the inn to spend the night. They are awakened by one of the castle guards, who tells them that the king has requested their presence. One of the king's scholars believes that the nearby lighthouse, the Beacon, holds the key to Buccanham's salvation.

The scholar wishes to acquire some glowmoss growing in the depths of the Den of the Dwarves on the eastern side of the island. He has devised a plan to attach glowmoss to the feet of the next child that is transformed into a monster and follow them to the Beacon, which has been impossible to explore due to the black flame at its summit. The King of Buccanham asks the party to journey to the Den of the Dwarves to fetch the glowmoss, as relations between the humans of Buccanham and the dwarves has grown strained over the years due to the death of Queen Bea, who was a dwarf. The party journeys to the depths of the cave and defeats the monster Mossferatu and his minions to acquire the moss, earning the admiration of the Foreman and the other dwarves, before making it back to Buccanham Palace. They arrive just in time to rub the glowmoss on a monster's feet as it is attacking the townspeople and it stalks off into the night, leaving behind a trail of glowing footprints. The armour seller tries to chase after the monster, but he is stopped by the King of Buccanham, who tells him that they are no warriors and wouldn't be able to survive in the monsters' lair. The king asks the party for assistance one more time and allows them to spend the night in the royal bedchamber. The next day, the king informs them that a sinister black flame burns at the top of the Beacon and is the cause of the great darkness enveloping the island. The flame can be extinguished with the Prism dew, which can be collected from the Rainbow Cove on Estard island.

A shimmering trail of footsteps leads from Buccanham all the way to the top of the Beacon. The party uses the prism dew to extinguish the black flame, but they are pulled into to a mysterious parallel dimension that appears afterwards. There, inside the dimension, the monster Togrus Maximus challenges the adventurers, but is eventually defeated after a difficult battle. The villain states that even though he has been defeated and the black flame has been extinguished, the Sea Dragon will continue to be frozen in ice. The babies that were transformed into monsters return to being human and the party returns to the top of the Beacon. They return to Buccanham Palace to speak with the king, who has informed them that the Lady Anaïs has disappeared under mysterious circumstances, leaving behind a letter telling them not to worry. The king believes that she has been kidnapped by monsters as retaliation for extinguishing the black flame. He then asks the group if they can journey to Emberdale and fetch the Guiding Light to relight the flame at the top of the lighthouse.

  • The name Buccanham Palace is spoken phonetically similar to Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the United Kingdom's monarch in London in the real world.
  • In Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, the newborns are transformed into Dancing devils instead of Lesser demons, since they do not make an appearance in the game.

References edit

  1. Bunny girl: "I always had a soft spot for Captain Sharkeye. It's a crying shame, it really is... You see, the Demon King put a curse on him for daring to fight back when the monsters plunged Buccanham into darkness and sealed it off from the rest of the world. They say his ship, the Sea Dragon, was frozen in place somewhere out in the middle of the ocean, and now it's stuck in a block of magical ice that will never, ever melt. Poor old Sharkie..."
  2. Warrior: "Well, the crew of the Sea Dragon used to be the most feared pirates in the world until King Buccanham made a deal with their captain, Sharkeye. After that, they became the King's personal fleet instead, and protected our merchant vessels from sea monsters out on the ocean wave. Unfortunately, they were rather too good at their work, and attracted the attention of the boss of all monsters. That's how we came to be in the pickle we're in now..."
