Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age edit

The Gloomnivore is encountered in the second act of the game in the depths of the Dundrasil ruins, where is feasts on the misery of the late King Irwin. It explains that it feeds on the negative emotions of humans, and that the tragedies Irwin has suffered during Mordegon's assault on Dundrasil has left him overflowing with anguish, allowing it to eat for sixteen years. Rab is enraged at the beast for treating his son-in-law like such, and leads the fight against it.

The monster is encountered in the same place during the third act, but has received a substantial power boost thanks to the awakening of Calasmos.

Etymology edit

  • The Gloomnivore's name is a combination of Gloom, meaning a sensation of deep sadness, and Carnivore.
  • The Baku in the monster's Japanese name might allude to an evil inversion of the youkai Baku. This creature eats the nightmares of people so that they can sleep peacefully, where as the Gloomnivore traps its victims in an endless nightmare.
