The Mushroom mage is a monster in the series.

Characteristics

Mushroom mages are purple walking mushrooms with darker purple spotted caps and a long orange tongue. They have gained the ability to cast ice magic on their opponents as revenge against mushroom-hunting humans. In the NES version of Dragon Quest IV, they have a slightly different appearance that makes them look more like Morphean mushrooms, with pale green stalks and neon green spots on their purple caps.

• The mushroom mage's Japanese name, Mage Matango (マージマタンゴ, Mage Matango^?) is derived from the 1963 Japanese horror film Matango about a group of castaways on an island who are slowly transformed into mushrooms. It was released in the United States in 1963 under the name Attack of the Mushroom People.
