The Nemean is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series. It first appeared as a low-level treasure map boss in Dragon Quest IX, eventually appearing both as a boss and a recruitable monster in other games.

Characteristics

Nemean is a chimeric monster made from a combination of various other creatures much like a manticore. It has the body shape, shaggy mane, and a tuft at the end of its long tail like a lion but with an scale-armoured back and both dragon tail and wings. It has red demonic eyes. Most of its body, including its fur and scaled abdomen are cream-coloured, while the draconic features are taupe and its face, inside of its ears, underside, and claws are light purple. The webbing on its dragon's wings are orange. In battle, it can deliver vicious slashes with its claws and can breathe out intense flames, while its tough hide makes it highly impervious to status ailments. In later games, Nemean gained the ability to breathe out bursts of blinding light and call down thunderbolts.

In Dragon Quest IX it is revealed, thanks to Fowleye, that the Nemean is one of the ten monsters that were created by Zenus remains (due to Corvus' attack) and also that the draconic lion used to be His "harebrained" head and in the Monster List is also revealed that "he could speak the mortal tongue, but had long forgotten".

Dragon Quest X

Nemean can be faced in the Magical Labyrinth as a boss. It is able to breathe out Blessed Breath and can call down bolts of lightning, as well as being able to increase its Tension with Feel the Burn when it is attacked.

Dragon Quest Tact

Nemean appears as a S-rank monster of the Beast family, appearing on its own banner alongside Gasmon. It can be faced as a boss in Chapter 4, Episode 9 in Part 4 of the main storyline.

Trivia

• In the original Japanese, Nemean's name Hanumān (ハヌマーン) is a reference to the Hindu demigod of the same name. He is a devotee of the god Rama and is also known as the "monkey god". Hanuman plays a major role in the Hindu epic Ramayana.
• Nemean's English name is a reference to the Nemean Lion, a creature with impervious golden fur that was slain as the first of the 12 labors of the hero Hercules.
