The Battleground

The Battleground is a dungeon in the second act of Dragon Quest XI. It's a floating island consisting mostly of grayish rock, and old ruins of the watchers civilization.

The entrance of the dungeon is covered by an impassable mist unless the Luminary has previously collected the Guiding Light.


Story[edit | edit source]

The Luminary and his party make landfall on the Battleground in search of a legendary ore to create a new Sword of Light. They find the Island completely impassable due to a purple mist shrouding the area. Lighting the Pillar in front of the entrance with the Guiding Light allows them to enter the dungeon. Throughout the dungeon they come across multiple stone tablets with inscriptions, left by the Watchers who lived there long ago. The tablets reveal, that a terrible battle took place there as the watchers fought to protect the ore from the servants of the "dark one". At the end of the dungeon the party enters the "Overlooked Cavern" and finds a lone piece of ore remaining. Erik recognized the ore as Orichalcum and excitedly suggests to sell it before realizing the greater purpose it has to serve.

'ERDREA WAS AT PEACE. BUT THEN DISASTER. DARK ONE CAME. HOPE TURNED TO DESPAIR.

'ONLY LUMINARY CAN DEFEAT HIM. AND ONLY WITH SWORD. SWORD OF PRECIOUS ORE.'

The ore found at the end of the dungeon is actually an Important Item/Key Item and not the "normal" Orichalcum found in Act 3. In the definitive Edition of Dragon Quest XI the item is instead referred to as rarefied orichalcum to differentiate the two.
