Tentacular

The Tentacular is a monster in the series.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Tentaculars are enormous squids that take inspiration from the mythological Kraken. They have light orange bodies and purple tinges on their head and mantle, as well as the suckers on their many tentacles. They are among the most dangerous monsters that can be encountered out at sea, being capable of attacking up to three times in a single turn in their original appearance. Their name is a combination of the words "tentacle" and "spectacular".

The tentaculars faced in Dragon Quest XI have grown to truly enormous proportions, matching those of their cousin Khalamari, and are aided in battle by their left and right tentacles, which will attack individually and protect its main body. They are powerful enough to fling around ships with ease and unleash devastating attacks with their tentacles that can knock seafarers on their feet. The molluscs can now also breathe out both ice-cold breath and Sweet Breath as part of their offensive capabilities.

Dragon Quest X [edit | edit source]

Tentacular began appearing in Version 5.0 on the beaches of the Netherworld. They are occasionally accompanied by one or two Vicious khalamari kids. They are able to act twice per turn and can perform a spinning attack or a combo attack with their tentacles that hits six times.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit | edit source]

During the party's first visit to Lonalulu, they offer to help out the villagers by defeating a Tentacular that has been terrorising the village. If the player talks to the cannon lady in Lonalulu, she tells them that Tentaculars hate loud noises and offers to lend the party her kanono cannon. The party sails out to sea where they encounter the sailors from Lonalulu, who try to warn them about the rampaging squid. Sylvando will fire the cannon at the Tentacular, which will cause it and its tentacles to be confused at the beginning of battle and reduces their Attack and Defence.

In the 2D modes of the Nintendo 3DS and Definitive Edition, the Tentacular is instead aided by a pair of Squid kids in battle and will call for help if they are defeated instead of regenerating its tentacles.
