The Merry man is a green coloration of the hoodlum found exclusively in Dragon Quest V. He is a static encounter, found multiple times through the game, typically guarding a treasure chest containing powerful gear.
Localization history[edit | edit source]
Though a different monster from robbin' 'oodlums, the merry man uses the same Japanese name as them カンダタこぶん (Kandata kobun). To differentiate it from the golden armoured minions, the localization team gave him the name merry man. Though the monster does not make any subsequent appearances in the series, the name merry man would go one to be used for the robbin' 'oodlums in a few spinoff titles.

- Coburg: Found along the western castle wall, guarding a Treasure chest containing Hela's armour
- Stockenbarrel: Found behind Bianca Whitaker's house, guarding a chest containing a Silk bustier.
- Precaria: To reach him, the player must pass through the windmill to reach the ledge where he's standing. He is guarding a chest containing Stolos' staff.
