"...Malroth! Lord and Master of Destruction! Receive of me my flesh in willing sacrifice...! Nnngh!"
—Hargon's last words
Malroth, known by his full title as the Master of Destruction is the final boss of Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line.
Malroth is not mentioned in his debut game until the finale, except for a False Idol bearing his likeness which is found in a cave and is needed to uncover the Cave to Rendarak. In the original version of the game, Malroth was infamous among players due to his ability to completely heal himself with HealAll spell.
Malroth reappears in Dragon Quest Builders 2 as a central figure, but as an amnesiac young man instead of a dark god. The circumstances to his sudden change of appearance, as well as his forgotten past, are crucial to the game's story.
Appearance and personality[edit | edit source]
Malroth is an immense evil god with both demonic and draconic features, his body covered in blue scales (green in some games) with an orange underside and wearing a necklace with a skull on it. He has six limbs, four of which appear to be arms, a massive pair of demonic wings on his back, and a serpent for a tail. His mouth is always shown as being a wide-opened grin, fangs clearly visible.
Being a god of destruction, Malroth is immensely powerful and more than capable of living up to his title. In all of his appearances Malroth has almost never spoken beyond primitive roars, preferring annihilation over conversation. At the start of the game, Malroth is only alluded to and rarely by his name. All that is first hinted to is his penchant for destruction and the fact that the Children of Hargon threatens all of Alefgard by trying to summon him. In the original NES version the False Idol is known as the Eye of Malroth; this marks the only time he is slightly referenced but there still exist statues in several dungeons that depict his likeness. In contemporary remakes such as the Android/iOS versions, summoning a deity of destruction is mentioned to be [[Hargon's ultimate goal but never referred to with its name until the end.
Being the cult's object of worship, Malroth is highly esteemed by his devotees--not that this matters to him, as his description in Dragon Quest IX states that he doesn't mind where his sacrifices come from. It is revealed in Builders 2 that his name is known only in the highest ranks among the Children of Hargon, this was presumably thought up by Hargon himself so that only he could address the deity and, by this tactic, it could only be directed personally by his nihilist pleas.
Appearances[edit | edit source]
Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line[edit | edit source]
The party does not come face-to-face with the evil god until after Hargon is slain. When the party tries to move away from Hargon's throne their path will be blocked by flames and the floor will begin to break apart, heralding Malroth's return. Though successful in defeating Hargon, the sorcerer summoned the god of destruction in death, leaving the Luminaries to contend with him in the final battle.

Dragon Quest Treasures[edit | edit source]Malroth's likeness is represented as Treasure No. 461, with a base value of 5,550,000. Dragon Quest Builders 2[edit | edit source]Malroth is a major character appearing in Builders 2. He accompanies the player as a helpful NPC for the majority of the game, participating in battle as an AI-controlled ally to kite enemy focus away from the player as a response to criticism of the first title. For more details, see Malroth (Character). Dragon Quest Rivals[edit | edit source]Malroth appears in the artwork for his own card and those depicting his abilities, both in his original demonic and humanoid forms. He was introduced in the first card pack as a legendary rare card and would inflict 4 damage to all units on the field when summoned, including allies. He was eventually reprinted in the seventh card pack, "Strange Tale of Light and Darkness" under the name "Destruction God Sidoh" alongside Hargon. As a reference to his ability to cast Fullheal in the original version of Dragon Quest II, all of Malroth's HP is restored at the end of the opponent's turn. Dragon Quest Walk[edit | edit source]Malroth first appeared in the game as a boss on June 24th, 2021 as part of a Dragon Quest II collaboration event. A special mega version of Malroth can be challenged by up to 12 players from June 26th to July 11th, 2021. Dragon Quest Tact[edit | edit source]
Malroth appears as an S-rank member of the ??? family as part of the original Dragon Quest II event on his own banner alongside Batmandrill. He can be faced in the event quest Chapter 5, Episode 4: Malroth, God of Destruction, as well as boss battles in the Hall of Hargon and Malroth's Menace Challenge Quests. Malroth can be scouted by the player by redeeming their Dark Lord/Hero Meeting Ticket S.
