The abyss diver is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series.

Introduced in Dragon Quest VII, it's a large aquatic monster that stalks the seas.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Abyss divers resemble plesiosaurs in general shape, but given fantastical flourishes through Akira Toriyama's artistry. They are purple in colour with pale yellow undersides, have a long neck, a fin on its back, and webbed feet. On its head, it has a tall crest and a pair of long purple horns. Its crest, fin, and webs on its feet are all coloured teal. Abyss divers are quite powerful when first faced by the player in every mainline game they appear in, and their breath attacks can devastate low level parties. The abyss diver also has access to ice magic to freeze enemies solid, consistently casting Crackle in each numbered title. Originally it was the weaker predecessor of the seasaur, but it has since become the stronger variant as of VIII.
