There is some confusion regarding the monster-focused vocations: Dragon Quest VI for the Super Famicom had the まもの使い (''Mamono Tsukai'') vocation, then the seventh game has  魔物ハンター (''Mamono Hantā''), it was changed to 魔物マスター (''Mamono Masutā'') in the [[Nintendo DS]] remake of DQVI and it's subsequent ports, the まもの使い (''Mamono Tsukai'') vocation returned in the tenth game, then まものマスター (''Mamono Masutā'') was used in both ''Stars'' and ''Walk'', then まもの使い (''Mamono Tsukai'') was used again in DQIII HD-2D and DQX Offline.


The profession is notable for frequently having its name changed even in the Japanese originals: it was changed to 魔物マスター (''Mamono Masutā'') in the [[Nintendo DS]] remake and it's subsequent ports, became 魔物ハンター (''Mamono Hantā'') in the seventh game, まもの使い (''Mamono Tsukai'') in the tenth game,  まものマスター (''Mamono Masutā'') in both ''Stars'' and ''Walk''. In all ''Monsters'' titles the vocation is called the モンスターマスター (''Monsutā Masutā''). Not counting the alternate kanji and katakana spellings, this leaves the vocation with three distinct Japanese names.
In the English side there has been consistency in the translations for the main series since Square Enix started using the Dragon Quest naming conventions: まもの使い is Monster Wrangler, 魔物ハンター is Monster Masher, and 魔物マスター is Monster Master. The Monster Master (魔物マスター Mamono Masutā) is a vocation first introduced in the remake of Dragon Quest VI. This vocation can sometimes put monsters to sleep or cause them to flee.

Monster master, wrangler and masher[edit | edit source]

There is some confusion regarding the monster-focused vocations: Dragon Quest VI for the Super Famicom had the まもの使い (Mamono Tsukai) vocation, then the seventh game has 魔物ハンター (Mamono Hantā), it was changed to 魔物マスター (Mamono Masutā) in the Nintendo DS remake of DQVI and it's subsequent ports, the まもの使い (Mamono Tsukai) vocation returned in the tenth game, then まものマスター (Mamono Masutā) was used in both Stars and Walk, then まもの使い (Mamono Tsukai) was used again in DQIII HD-2D and DQX Offline.

In the English side there has been consistency in the translations for the main series since Square Enix started using the Dragon Quest naming conventions: まもの使い is Monster Wrangler, 魔物ハンター is Monster Masher, and 魔物マスター is Monster Master. (Monster Masher used to be known as "Tamer" on the PS1 translation of Dragon Warrior VII).

Due to all these vocations being monster-focused, most people tend to mix them up, despite them being different: Monster Wranglers can scout monsters, while Monster Masters cannot, despite both of them using similar fighting styles and skills. Monster Masher, while similar, tames monsters and sends them to the Monster Meadows.

In Dragon Quest Tact, young Terry introduces himself as being a "Monster Scout", and the Hero of the fifth game has the title of "Legendary Monster Wrangler". Later on, the game introduced a unit based on the female Monster Wrangler from Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation[edit | edit source]

The Monster Master suffers considerable reductions to their strength (-15%), resilience (-20%), HP (-20%), and MP (-30%), befitting a starting vocation characters are not meant to spend too much time in. Various breath skills are learned through the profession, in addition to the Puff! spell upon mastery. Monster masters have a small chance to put monsters to sleep at the start of the battle.

Monster Master is one of the prerequisites for the Ranger vocation (along with Merchant and Thief).

In the original version of VI, the Monster Master vocation didn't exist yet. Instead, the Monster Wrangler vocation filled its gap. Having a wrangler in the party activated the chance that a monster would join you upon its defeat, however this function was dropped in the Nintendo DS remake in lieu of Slime Buddies.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined[edit | edit source]

In the Reimagined version, Monster Master replaces Monster Masher, as the Monster Meadows are not present in this version of the game, and thus monsters cannot be tamed and sent there.

Monster Masters can summon friendly monsters of four families (slime, zombie, beast, and dragon) to aid them during battle for one turn. They can also cast spells from the Zam line and use spells and skills such as Dazzle and Sow Chaos to cause some ailments to their enemies.

To unlock this vocation, a character must master the Thief and Shepherd vocations. Mastering Monster Master and two other intermediate vocations can help a character unlock the Hero vocation.

Monsters series[edit | edit source]

Generally speaking, the protagonist of every game in the Monsters sub series was referred to as a Monster Master until the younger Terry made an appearance in Dragon Quest Tact, where he dubbed himself as a Monster Scout. With the release of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, the term has been retired in the spinoff series for Monster Wrangler. Certain titles will place more emphasis on this profession than others, such as treating it as a societal class in it's own right.

Dragon Quest of the Stars[edit | edit source]

The Monster Master utilizes breath attacks and enjoys excellent HP growth, but has mediocre growth in all other stats. It was a prerequisite to unlock the Druid vocation.

Dragon Quest Walk[edit | edit source]

Monster Masters were added in a March 2022 update as part of the game's 2.5 year anniversary. Unlike the other advanced vocations, a character is able to become a Monster Master after befriending more than 35 types of monsters. Their weapons of choice are Wands, Spears, Claws, and Whips.
