Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is the second remake of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. As its title imples, this remake reworks the game's structure, narrative, aesthetic, and gameplay mechanics. Dragon Quest VII Reimagined takes elements from the original game and its Nintendo 3DS remake, while adding new ones too.
A demo of the game released on January 7th, which contains up to the conclusion of the Ballymolloy storyline. Players who complete it can transfer their save to the full game, and doing so unlocks a unique dress for Maribel.
Changes & additions[edit | edit source]
Presentation[edit | edit source]
- Characters are displayed in a handcrafted artstyle while the environments are presented as dioramas.
- The proportionate size of characters in relation to the environments has been returned to the original PlayStation scale.
- The character's weapon and shield are now displayed in battle.
- Characters can wear different outfits like the feature in Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition.
- The menus are much more visual and simplified, marking a shift from the usual UI of the series.
Characters[edit | edit source]
- The Caretaker has more personality and a defined backstory.
- Pollock now has light brown hair instead of black.
Scenarios[edit | edit source]
- The process of opening the Shrine of Mysteries has been altered considerably:
- Kiefer has filched the sizzling stone off of Pike and brought a tablet fragment with him, using both on the statue after his late mother's ring doesn't work, saving the player the trouble of walking back and forth across Estard to acquire them.
- A voice speaks through the statue and instructs the Hero and Kiefer to obtain three more tablet shards in order to be gain access to the shrine. Eventually, the voice that instructed them through the statue is revealed to be The Caretaker.
- Dermot the hermit has locked the way to one of the shards after being unable to complete a challenge in his youth. This challenge consists of a small shadow puzzle and a battle.
- Beyond the opening, the game is considerably more non-linear than before, allowing players to tackle the problems of the past in nearly any order provided the requisite tablet fragments have been obtained.
- The player also has more agency within a given island scenario than before. For example, the player's decisions influence the boss sealing Ballymolloy and the ending of that adventure.
- Fragment locations have been changed and a checklist has been added to the system menu to keep track of them.
- The story of the present-day Roamers has been altered so that Aishe joins the party much sooner than in past versions.
- New scenarios that elaborate on the Hero and Maribel's childhood have been added.
- New scenario featuring an older Kiefer has been added.
- Several recurrent monsters have been added to the game's bestiary.
Other[edit | edit source]
- The Castle Estard bank has been replaced with a mini medal exchange, granting players access to prizes much sooner.
- The Rainbow Cove is now accessible from the overworld, instead of needing to enter through the Shrine of Mysteries. The puzzles have also been simplified.
- A battle arena has been added. "The Road of Regal Wretches" is new paid DLC that allows players to battle against bosses from the Erdrick trilogy.
- In-game lists have been added to the menu: a monster list, an equipment list, an item list, a minimedal list, and a fragments list.
- After completing the Alltrades Abbey story, the characters can change their vocations anywhere, anytime.
- Moonlighting, a new mechanic that allows characters to have two vocations at once, has been added.
- A new power-up mechanic has been introduced, being "Let Loose". It allows characters to unleash powerful passive skills. For example, if the hero has the Fledgling Fisherman vocation, he can let loose to use the "Ocean's Devotion" skill. This skill nullifies all damage for each party member once.
- The monster heart items have been reworked into accessories that bestow special effects like passive skills, increased stats or resistances. Most hearts can be obtained by defeating vicious monsters.
Cut content[edit | edit source]
- The woodcutter and his cabin east of Pilchard Bay have been removed.
- The El Ciclo, Gröndal, & Providence scenarios seem to have been removed.
- The casinos, the Excellence Grading Organisation, the Immigrant Town, and Monster Meadows side-content have been removed.
- The vocation outfits and the fragment radar from the 3DS version have been removed.
