The Double-edged sword is a recurring weapon in the series, and one of the most notable cursed items. Though the sword is incredibly powerful it will always strike the wielder with recoil damage, with the exact amount varying between titles. Furthermore, the sword is cursed in it's first two games and can only be removed at a Church.
The Double-edged sword is a sword in the series.

Design wise, the sword was originally an oddly shaped, almost Christmas tree-like spread of blades stemming from the hilt. With the fifth game the sword became much a more elegant scimitar, with the lower edge of the blade curving back to the wielder's wrist and matching a similar protrusion extending from the pommel. Due to all sword animations being based on the same swinging motion, the double-edged sword was changed again for the eighth game into a bulky bastard sword style weapon that has two sections of razor blades before terminating in a spear tip.
Characteristics
The sword is very powerful, but is cursed, inflicting damage to the wielder each time they attack, with the exact amount varying between games. Since it is a cursed weapon, it cannot be unequipped normally, requiring the player to go to a church and receive a benediction first.
* The original design for the sword from the Famicom versions of III and IV, is an unusual sword with several blades sprouting from the middle of the blade, almost in the shape of an upside-down Christmas tree. This design returns for the HD-2D Remake games.
* The sword's design from V, VII, and remake versions of III is closer in appearance to a scimitar, with a series of interlocking blades designed to stab into the wielder's wrist and arm.
* The design that appears in VIII features a blade that is split into three sections, with two sections in the center of the blade that protrude out and look closer in appearance to a battle axe rather than a sword. This was done so that all swords share the same attack animations in battle.
