Machine Family (Japanese Katakana: マシン Romanji:Mashin) refers to monsters in Dragon Quest series that have mechanical bodies, ranging from full-on robots such as the Killing machines to automated slot machines such as the Penny pinchers. Due to the fantasy-based nature of the series, mechanical monsters are among the rarest of any family; these rust buckets also boast incredible resistances to status ailments of all varieties and a high tolerance for elemental damage save for lightning. In some spin-offs, members of this family are included within the Material family.

Effective skills and weapons[edit | edit source]
The aptly named Can Opener technique will deal significantly high damage to machines in every game it appears in, and the Giant wrench, Handrills, & Hammer handrills will deal an extra 20% damage.
- the Metal Slash skill will deal 150% damage to machine family monsters in all versions of the sixth game, but not in any other title that features the ability.
