The Shade is an enemy that first appeared in Dragon Quest III. It was originally a solid blue shadow, but was depicted as solid black with orange eye light in the SNES remake of the third game. When it reappeared in the eighth game it kept the dark color, but changed its eyes for a shade of blue similar to its original sprite's; this has been the look the creature has kept ever since.
