Effect Increases the intelligence of the wearer.

The thinking cap is a recurring piece of headwear in the Dragon Quest series, designed to augment its wearer's intelligence. Despite its name, it looks more like a tiara, with a green jewel in the front under three small blue jewels and larger blue ones on either side. Older concept art shows a piece going across the crown, but the modernized design shown in the seventh game does not

Appearances

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride

The thinking cap has a defence bonus of +40, and increases wisdom by 15 points. It is sold in Lofty Peak and Faerie Lea for 13,000 gold, and can be equipped by the Hero, Parry, and Tuppence. The helm is useful for bumping up the loyalty of fresh monster recruits, who will only obey commands when their wisdom is at least 20.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation

The cap features the traditional +40 defence and +15 wisdom, but now boasts +21 style. It is sold in Despairia, and the well armour shop east of Port Haven. The Hero, Carver, Nevan, Terry, Amos, Lizzie, and Goowain can equip it.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past

The thinking cap has a defence bonus of +37, a style bonus of +21, and increases the wearer's wisdom by 15. It can be equipped by the Hero, Kiefer, Sir Mervyn, and Aishe. The cap can be acquired if a male character wins the wisdom category for the Excellence Grading Organisation.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

The thinking cap has a defence bonus of +38, and increases wisdom by 15 points. It can be purchased for 13,000 gold in Tryan Gully and created through alchemy. It can only be worn by Jessica and Angelo.

Etymology

The name of the thinking cap comes from the English phrase "to put on your thinking cap", a state of mind or an imagined piece of headgear that one would put on in order to solve a problem or do some serious pondering.
