The very first members of the Undead family introduced in the series, Ghosts are a rarely appearing monster.

Characteristics

Ghosts are, well, Ghosts. Mischievous undead shades from beyond. They float, have a pointed purple and red witches hat, arms, and a taunting face, always with its tongue hanging out.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past

A stronger, giant sized boss version of the ghost is found at the end of the downloadable Ghost Busting DLC. Although it possess no new skills or spells, it hits hard enough to knock most unseasoned adventurers out of action in a single spooky swipe.

Ghosts can be found in the Doubtback. During the day, they wander around in the caves, and at night, they wander around in the plains, mostly where the Missing lynx hunts. They may also appear in battles with other monsters, but only above-ground and at night. They tend to travel with a Dracky at night.

All wild Ghosts, when scouted, have the "Graveheart" and "Wisdom Boost" skill paths, and may have another "wild" skill path, as well.
