Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past edit

The angel's tears are a legendary elixir that are able to reverse the effects of petrification caused by the grey rain. Klemens, a man from the village of Regenstein sought it out after returning from a supply run, having found that all of the people of the village had been turned into stone while he was away. However, by the time that he acquired the elixir and returned to his village, the statues that already been too severely weathered by the elements for it to have any effect and decided not to use it. Klemens then resigns himself to his fate, deciding to stay in Regenstein and wait for his death. Fifty years pass by and eventually, the Hero and his companions travel to the village from the Shrine of Mysteries, coming across its stone inhabitants and running into Klemens, who is now an old man. Klemens says that all of the villagers have turned to stone due to a curse and tells them they should leave instead, as there is no way to get rid of the curse. However, before they leave, he decides to give the young adventurers the bottle of angel's tears and warns them that strange things happen during the night.

In the middle of the night, the Hero awakens and finds that each villager's statue glows mysteriously and, upon examining them, he gets a glimpse of their life right before they were turned to stone by the rain. He runs into Klemens again, who explains the glowing statues and the history of Regenstein and the yearly Regentanz, the ceremony to call down the rains. Klemens was away fetching supplies from a faraway town when he returned and noticed a large purple cloud over the village. Although it was a heavy rainfall, the rain was dirty and grey, turning the villagers to stone in a short amount of time. He believes the statues' glow is the villagers' grudge towards him for escaping the fate of the grey rain. He wishes there was a way to return the statues back into humans, but laments his fate. In the morning, the party speaks with Klemens again and learn about the secret passages located underneath the village, as well as telling them a rhyme that he learned after he acquired the angel's tears.

"'Tears of angel scatter slow

Drift und fall to ground below...'"

—Rhyme about the angel's tears

The party discover a hidden staircase in Regenstein's outskirts that goes underground, eventually leading to the big rock found in the middle of the village. From the top of the rock, the entire village stretches out and the Hero decides to sprinkle the angel's tears as it would reach all of the statues. Upon using the elixir, daylight returns to Regenstein and a small boy emerges from another hidden staircase near the village's outskirts. The party speaks to the boy, named Felix, a villager who happened to escape being petrified by the grey rain. With Felix in tow, the group goes to speak with Klemens, who is shocked to find that he both escaped the curse and mysteriously never aged. After spending another night in the village, Klemens and Felix decide to leave Regenstein in order to warn other people about the grey rain, as well as search for a way to return the statues back to normal.

Eventually, the party travels to the town of Greenthumb Gardens in the past and discover that all of the people there have been turned into stone statues, as well, much like Regenstein. However, they discover the monster Rainiac, who is the culprit behind the grey rain. They defeat the monster and sprinkle the angel's tears over the town. As only a short amount of time had passed after the petrification took place, the elixir is able to return the statues back to normal.
