Foo dogs are large Beasts that are a cross between lions and rabid dogs with silvery white fur, a golden mane and tail and gold tufts of hair on its legs and paws. It has glowing yellow eyes and drool trailing from its fang-lined mouth. In the Monsters spinoff games, the foo dogs are part of the Material family as a reference to the guardian lion dog statues they are based on.
Foo dog first appeared as a D-rank monster of the Beast family as part of the limited Dragon Quest IV event. It can be recruited from Chapter 1, Episode 3: A Training Journey of the event quests at any difficulty, eventually appearing in the main storyline in Chapter 18, Episode 1: Approaching Castle Town. It later appeared in the "Spring Training! Train with Lt Goresby-Purrvis" event, being recruitable from every 5th floor of the Great Cherry Tree starting from the 2nd until the 22nd, as well as the Abracadabrador Barman stages of Majellan's Rebellion! during the limited Beast Fest event. The Foo dog can participate in Ragnar, Purrcival, and Alphyn's Battle Roads as a party member.
Foo dog is a corruption of fu dog, another term for the Chinese lion guardians frequently seen in statue form at the entrances of buildings. In Japan, they are known as shishi or komainu.
The two Foo dogs being paired with Master Kung can form a name that is based on the word "kung-fu" (Master Kung and Foo dog).
