Kafrizz is a spell in the Dragon Quest series that first appeared in Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation.

It is the penultimate fireball spell, being superior to Frizz & Frizzle while being inferior to Kafrizzle.

Localization history

The Japanese spell Merazōma had previously been localized as Kafrizzle, as it had no higher-tier Frizz variant. However, with Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker and Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies, they added a higher-tier being メラガイアー Meragaiā. To work around this, they renamed this spell Kafrizz, and let the Kafrizzle naming for the newer one.

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation

The Mage and Sage vocations learn this spell at level 36. It does 160~200 damage, and costs 12 MP to cast.

The enemies EvilCloud, Flying flayer, Baramos, Soul of Baramos, and Baramonster can use this spell against the party.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake

Kafrizz is learned by Mages and Sages at level 31, provided their wisdom exceeds 140 points; if it does not then learning the spell can be delayed up to level 33. Kafrizz costs 12 MP and deals up to 208~247 damage to one foe.

When cast by enemies Kafrizz will deal 132~158 damage to a party member.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen

Maya Mahabala learns Kafrizzle at level 33. It deals about 160~200 damage in the NES original and 180~200 in all other versions, consuming 10 MP.

The enemies Prince of darkness, Vis mager, and the first, third, and fourth forms of Aamon in Chapter 6 can use this spell against the party.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride

This spell is used by Bishop Ladja in V in several cut-scenes. Bianca Whitaker and Nera Briscoletti both learn this spell at level 33, along with several monster companions. It inflicts between 180~200 damage, making it among the hardest hitting spells.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation

This spell can only be obtained by mastering the Armamentalist vocation. It costs 10 MP to cast, and hits between 180~200.

It can be cast by the enemies Loss leader, Mortamor's third form, and Nokturnus.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past

Only Armamentalists and Black bishop vocations learn this spell at ranks 7 and 8, respectively.

It can be cast by the enemies Night knight, Sconstrosity, Sulkk, Fire Spirit,and Orgodemir (on his first form on Disc 1, and on his second and third forms in Disc 2).

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

Jessica Albert learns this spell at level 35. The spell will deal 145~160 base damage, and once Her Wisdom surpasses 480, the spell will deal up to 240~260 damage.

  • In the 3DS port, the base range of the spell was increased to 153~167. This gives it a maximum range of 297~311, and necessitates a Wisdom stat of 580 to get that high.

It can be used by Evil Jessica, Snapdragon, Wight priest, Marcello, Statue of Jessica, both forms of Rhapthorne, Evil Jessica in Memoriam, and Estark. It's available to the Infamous Monsters Bishop (Recruit) and Hev.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies

Learned by: Mage Level 53 Incinerates a single enemy with an enormous fireball, dealing 180~200 base damage for 18 MP. Once the caster's Magical Might surpasses 220, the spell will steadily grow towards it's cap of 307~331.

When cast by a monster Kafrizz will deal 104~127 damage.

Dragon Quest X

Kafrizz is a late-game spell, with magi learning it at level 64 and Dancers at 56. It costs 12 MP to cast with a range of 15 meters and a base damage of 152~164, and the initial damage formula is Magical Might x 0.386 + 46 for a maximum of 474~486. Once the sorcerer's spellcasting skillfulness reaches 871 the range calculation will change to (Magical Might - 999) /4 +474~486 for a new cap of 599~611 at 1,500 Magical Might.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

Veronica learns Kafrizz at level 54 and the Luminary at level 56. It costs 21 MP to cast and deals a base range of 146~170 damage at 287 Magical Might before capping off at 307~331 when her Magical Might reaches 344.

Dragon Quest Monsters

Called Blazemost in this game, it is an upgraded form of Blazemore. Blazemore will grow into Blazemost when a monster reaches as least level 28 with at least 112 MP and 146 Intelligence, and deals 180~200 damage for 10 MP.

Blazemost now requires 263 Intelligence to upgrade.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker

Kafrizz costs 10 MP as in the main games, and has a base range of 141~171. Once the monster's Wisdom exceeds 250, it will slowly approach its max range of 297~327 at 999 Wisdom. It is learned from:

Kafrizz deals 144~159 base damage and has a maximum range of 329~344. It can be learned from all the previous skills as well as:

Terry's Wonderland 3D & Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key

Kafrizz costs 10 MP and deals 171~189 damage. Once the monster's Wisdom reaches 999, the spell will hit for 361~399 damage.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3

Kafrizz has the same damage range as in the previous two games.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince

Kafrizz costs 12 MP and is learned via the Baramos, Firebrand, Frizz Virtuoso, Impactor, Mortamor, Orgodemir, and Smart Blazer talents. It has a base power of 180, and will deal an average of 380 once the caster's wisdom stat reaches 999.

Kafrizz can be learned by the Dragonlord at level 31, Popp at level 42, and costs 72 MP to cast. An Ability Scroll for it can be purchased through the Legend League Season 1 Medal Swap Shop. It has a range of three squares away from the caster in any direction and inflicts major Frizz-type spell damage to a single enemy. Upgrading the spell increases its damage and reduces the amount of MP it costs to cast.

There are also two variations of the spell, Myafrizz and Devildragon's Kafrizz, which can be cast by the Kaleidocat and Mordragon respectively.

Dragon Quest Treasures

Kafrizz upgrades naturally from Frizzle and is learned by king she-slimes, metal slimes, slimes, silhouettes, and wight kings at level 33. It lobs a great ball of fire at one enemy for 18 MP for the first time since IX.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Kafrizz appears as the Hero's neutral special move in Smash Ultimate. It is the fully charged version of Frizz, and creates an explosive, multi-hit flame upon contact with an opponent for 36 MP. The first hit deals 19% damage, with each subsequent flare searing for 3% and totaling for 31% if all six fireballs connect with an opponent. Kafrizz has high knockback and deals excellent shield damage, but the ending lag the Hero suffers means he can be punished if he casts it at the wrong time.
