Introduced in Dragon Quest VII, they are monstrous treasure chests of an imposing black color rimmed on the edges with gold and teal tongues hanging out.
Pandora's box is essentially the most powerful form of the treasure chestmonsters. It can use sudden-death moves that target the whole party, move more than once per round, and steal MP from its opponent when its own MP, which is rather low, gets too depleted for it to cast its spells. The monster often has the ability to deliver desperate attacks with its bites.
Open this chest with trepidation, for it contains despair, envy, prejudice, discord, and everything in between. Will hope remain when all else is removed, or simply misery?
NOTE: the boss version of the pandora's box that is fought in the Temple of Trials has no resistance to banishment, meaning the best way to finish it off is to cast Poof and Blasto as often as possible.
While absent from the original, pandora's box makes appearances in the remakes as a monster encountered in the bonus dungeon. Given its strength and the absence of items that hamper sudden-death, it is one of the most dangerous enemies in the game, especially when encountered as a group.
Pandora's box (パンドラボックス, Pandora bokkusu ) Big Book of Beasts No.: #172
Like a demented jack-in-the-box, this well-camouflaged monster lives to surprise unwary travellers. Often carries precious materials that can be used in the alchemy pot.
Much like in the previous game, Pandora's boxes disguise themselves as blue treasure chests in high-level areas. As always, it has the ability to land Desperate attacks on characters and this time around, has the ability to cast the dreaded Kathwack.
Unlike the other chest monsters, there is no limit to how many times a pandora's box can be fought as they can be summoned repeatedly by Overweening Pride. However, they are only guaranteed to drop seeds of skill from the scripted encounters.
Greed, envy, sloth, pride...You name the sin, this barbarous box likely once contained it. Those unfortunate enough to encounter it will have a hard time believing there's any hope hidden in its depths

Pandora's box appears as an A-rank monster of the Inorganic family as part of the Dragon Quest VII event, appearing on both Maribel Mayde and Ruff's banners. It could eventually be scouted from any limited banner, as well. The Pandora's box can participate in Kiefer's Battle Road as a party member.
