The Dancing flame is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series. Introduced in Dragon Quest II, it is a human-shaped being of fire sporting a smoldering smile.
Dancing flames are somewhat humanoid in shape, having two arms, two legs, and a round body with a slight lump at the top to help put a head to their phantasmal face. In some titles they are depicted as having blue fire filling the insides of their yellow-red fire bodies, indicating that their centers are much hotter than the rest of their body.
Seeing as how they appear to be fire itself, dancing flames are usually shown to be masters of fire attacks both magic and skill based. Their fiery bodies also give a kick to their physical attacks, and provides them with full inferno immunity in all appearances.
The Flame is a two-star member of the Elemental family with a weight of 3. It can be found in the Cave to Rendarak. It naturally learns Fire Breath, Blaze and Panic Dance. Its in-game description reads "It was given life by flames. It must eat burning things to live."
Dancing flames are among the Platiosi that are part of the Plob and appear specifically in Flucifer's Necropolis, though they can show up in tank battles elsewhere. They attack using a prolonged wave of fire breath, an attack that works very well at wrecking the insides of a tank. Despite being made mostly of fire, Rocket, the player's character, has no difficulty in carrying them around. A dancing flame defeated by being thrown into water will always yield a Lucky Bag containing either a Chili Pepper or Fire Water, at least until the player has sent home the maximum of sixteen Lucky Bags.
Some say these fiery phantasms are the souls of the damned, burning with hatred for humankind. They try to put a brave face on their unhappy fate, and get very upset if anyone suggests their smiles are just for show.
Dancing flame appears as a D-rank monster of the Inorganic family. It will join the party in Chapter 13, Episode 5: Burning Thoughts and it stars in its own Battle Road. It can be fully awakened by repeating the same level or Chapter 13, Episode 7: Mind the Heat! Part 1. The dancing flame can also participate in the Battle Roads of the Wax murderer and Gremlin as a party member.
