Pressure Pointer is an ability in the series.

Characteristics edit

This ability attempts to instantly kill a single enemy with a low chance of success; if it fails, it deals 50% of the amount of damage of a normal attack to the target instead. Depending on the game, its rate of success is determined by the target's resistance to Whack or it is treated as a critical hit, allowing it to instantly kill metal slimes. In some games, it can only be performed with a spear.

Appearances edit

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake edit

Pressure Pointer is an enemy-only ability that can be used by Handsome crab and Death scorpion. It has the same effects as the III HD-2D Remake.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake edit

Pressure Pointer costs 4 MP to use and has a 25% chance to instantly kill a single enemy, dealing 50% damage if it fails. It can be learned by a Warrior starting at level 21 if their Wisdom exceeds 39. The skill's accuracy is unaffected if the user is enveloped by illusions. It also ignores the effects of both buffs and debuffs. Since Pressure Pointer is treated as a critical hit, it is effective against metal slimes. On the enemy side, it can be used by Handsome crab.

  • Pressure Pointer can be used by a friendly Handsome crab at 1★ Species Strength and a Minidemon at 3★ Species Strength.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation edit

Pressure Pointer costs 0 MP to use and attempts to instantly kill a single enemy, dealing 50% damage of a normal attack if it fails. It can be learned by advancing to rank 6 of the Martial Artist vocation.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past edit

Pressure Pointer once again costs no MP to use and attempts to instantly kill a single enemy, dealing 50% damage if it fails. In the original Sony PlayStation version, it is a hybrid ability learned by reaching maturity as a Martial Artist or Thief, either by reaching rank 5 or completing 30 battles without changing vocations, then immediately switching to the other vocation.

  • In the Nintendo 3DS version, hybrid abilities no longer exist and Pressure Pointer is learned by simply reaching rank 6 as a Martial Artist like in Dragon Quest VI.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies edit

Pressure Pointer costs 3 MP to use and has a fixed 1⁄8 (12.5%) chance of instantly killing a single enemy, dealing 50% damage of a normal attack if it fails. It is learned by investing 22 skill points into the Spear skill. Pressure Pointer is required for Quest #65: Operation Mercury, where the player must defeat three Metal medleys with its instant death effect.
