"No act better embodies His teachings than war. No sin is more cardinal than ending the fighting—whether in victory or defeat. It is our fate to fight forever and ever."

—Anessa, to Malroth and the Builder, about the never-ending war

Anessa is a character from Dragon Quest Builders 2, being an inhabitant of the besieged kingdom of Moonbrooke. She is the general of the Moonbrooke Brigade of Guards, and the kingdom's greatest tactician. She and Warwick serve as knights and advisors to the King of Moonbrooke.

Appearance and Personality[edit | edit source]

Anessa has icy blue eyes and lavender hair, masked by a helmet resembling that of a Roman galea. She wears a red tunic with maroon pants, a black belt with a large yellow-gold buckle and matching orange gloves and boots. Her chest is protected by an iron cuirass, and her character art depicts her with an iron broadsword, although she initially appears with a copper sword. Like all other NPCs on the island of Moonbrooke, her idle animation is of her rubbing her arms to stay warm in the cold.

She is a very stern young woman, befitting her position in the Moonbrooke military, but she harbors a vulnerable side she shows only to those who have earned her utmost trust. She suggests the Builder build a play room on the Isle of Awakening, but she is averse to the idea of secretly enjoying cute things and stuffed animals when she is confronted directly after her request. Villagers are also known to call her a "stubborn stick-in-the-mud" as per one of her lines, and she attempts to get rid of this title with various methods such as singing tunelessly, like Haydin the bard. Anessa is distrustful of Malroth during much of the campaign, but softens up to him after fighting side-by-side.

Anessa seems to be quite close with Warwick, serving the King together and feeling distraught when Warwick is outed as a traitor and is slain by the Moonbrooke Brigade in battle. She also talks about him occasionally on the Isle of Awakening after his passing - she comments that, despite knowing that she should not dwell on the past, she thinks he would have loved what the Builder had made.

Dragon Quest Builders 2[edit | edit source]

The Builder and Malroth first find Anessa crippled by poison after facing "a pestilential fiend in battle". After the Builder crafts an antidotal herb for her, she is cured of the poison and heals enough to stand up, but Warwick still suggests she stay back to recover while he leads a mission to reclaim Moonbrooke's throne room.

At first, she appears to be very loyal to the Children of Hargon and doesn’t immediately become friendly with the Builder. She is skeptical about the utility of building, but allows it due to the Builder creating incredible fortifications for the castle. Unlike the believers of Khrumbul-Dun and Furrowfield, she states that she does not have any desire to stop the building from happening. She justifies building as necessary to continue the never-ending war of Moonbrooke, just as the Children of Hargon decrees it. However, this turns out to be a facade, as she reveals later on that she was only pretending to have faith in the Children of Hargon in order to protect herself from the traitor - in fact, she had always had believed in the power of building ever since she was a child.

After joining the Builder at the Isle of Awakening, she expresses regret for partially being responsible for fracturing their relationship with Malroth, and not putting in more effort to help them make up.

It is later revealed that the world that the Builder and Malroth are exploring is nothing but an illusion created by Hargon. Anessa is one of the illusions created to populate the illusory world.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Anessa and Warwick may be a parallel to Dragon Quest XI's Hendrik and Jasper.
    • Both are pairs of knights whom so happen to be the two right-hand-men and close advisors to their Kings (the King of Moonbrooke/King Carnelian)
    • Both trained together for a long time before the events of their respective games.
    • Out of the pairs, one of the two (Anessa/Jasper) is the tactician and one (Warwick/Hendrik) is the swordsman.
    • One (Warwick/Jasper) betrays their kingdom (Moonbrooke/Heliodor) due to feeling unheard by their peers (Warwick's pleas for the King; Jasper's envy for Hendrik's glory) and promises from the monsters (the Wrecktor/Mordegon), eventually turning into a monster with grey skin and wings (a silvapithecus/Jasper Unbound).
    • This traitor is mentioned to advise their King to pursue a course of action that detriments their kingdom (not technically true in the case of Jasper).
    • The two in the pairs also parallel each-other. For Hendrik and Jasper, they represent yin and yang, with Hendrik's armour being black and Jasper's being silver. For Anessa and Warwick, their original stances on the war are vastly different to their final stance once the traitor is revealed; while Warwick is initially enthusiastic about building and winning the war, he later says that "it matters not who wins this accursed war" and sticking to the values of the Children of Hargon. On the other hand, Anessa initially appears to stick to the Children's beliefs but later reveals that she had always loved building since she was a child. Moreover, Anessa's main colour in her design is red, while Warwick's is blue, which are complementary colours on the colour wheel.
  • After the events of Moonbrooke, on the Isle of Awakening, one of Digby's dialogue lines has him mention that Anessa came to him and his close friend Dougie asking the best way to build muscle.
