The Armamentalist (魔法戦士, Mahou Senshi?, lit. Magic Warrior), also known as the Magic Knight, is a vocation in the Dragon Quest series. Combining the abilities of Warriors and Mages, they have shifted from single-target specialists to capable crowd-controllers since their debut, and have gained a Musketeer motif in official illustrations.

Armamentalists gain strong spells and skills at the expense of most stats. A character needs to master both the Warrior and Mage vocations to become a Armamentalist. They are the only advanced vocation to feature no additional traits or special effects.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past edit

In the original Sony PlayStation version, the class was known as the Ranger (not to be confused with the Ranger vocation from other games). They are still the reliable magic knight it was in VI, and requires the same prerequisites. In the Nintendo 3DS version, Armamentalist outfits are similar to stereotypical musketeers, wearing tunics, leather boots, and large plumed hats like those seen in Dragon Quest IX.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined edit

Armamentalist is an intermediate vocation that requires Warrior and Mage. It offers a few supportive spells like Oomph, Magic Barrier, and Bounce; and a variet of magic-infused physical skills like Flame Slash, Gust Slash, or Flamesplitter; and even some spells like Kasizz, Kacrack, and Kasizzle. They can also reduce the enemy's elemental resistance with Double Jeopardy.

Mastering this vocation and two other intermediate vocations unlocks the Hero vocation.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies edit

The Armamentalist is a powerful proponent of the formidable Fource. They are quite different from the Armamentalists of previous games. In battle, they can naturally equip wands, swords, bows, and shields, and their repertoire of spells include various enhancing and debilitating spells. However, they are not very good at directly damaging enemies on their own. Their attributes are above average all around and their equipment choices are very good, allowing them to equip various suits of armour and helmets. Despite their Magical Might being quite high, they are incapable of learning any attack spells on their own.

Their Coup-de-Grace is Voice of Experience, which increases the EXP payout after battle by a random rate. The Armamentalist's unique vocational skill is Fource. The Fource skill grants bonuses to the character's Strength, Resilience, Charm, Magical Might, and Max. HP. The main draw of the vocation is the ability to imbue party members with various elemental Fources, which grant them elemental resistance and allows them to deal damage based on the element of the Fource used. Multiple Fources can be used on a character at the same time and, if a character using Fource has the 'Armamentalist's Album' in their inventory from completing Quest #111: The Fource...Forever, it will affect the entire party.

Dragon Quest Walk edit

Armamentalists were added to the game in a March 2020 update. A character can become an Armamentalist by reaching level 50 with the Warrior and Mage vocations and their weapon choices are Swords, Knives, Wands, and Whips. Their unique vocational characteristic is Fource Break, which has a chance of lowering the enemy's resistance to the element they use offensively. Reaching level 70 as an Armamentalist is required in order to become either a Grand Sorcerer or Demon Swordsman.

Notable Armamentalists edit

  • The Prince of Cannock's vocation is listed as an Armamentalist in the smartphone and Nintendo Switch versions of Dragon Quest II. It is also his starting vocation in Theatrhythm Dragon Quest.
  • Alexander, one of the Seven Sages from Dragon Quest VIII, is described as a talented magical swordsman. In the Japanese version of the game, his title shares the same name as the vocation.
  • Alistair, a descendant of the sage Alexander and Jessica's older brother, inherited some of his ancestor's skill in swordsmanship and magic.

Trivia edit

  • Faust, one of the ranks from the original Sony PlayStation version of Dragon Quest VII, is a character from German folklore who attained great power after making a pact with a demon.
