Heliodor

Heliodor is a kingdom in Dragon Quest XI, being the central and most powerful kingdom of its world, Erdrea. It is ruled by King Carnelian. The kingdom is divided into three sections, with the small high-class areas being situated closest to the castle, the larger middle-class in the center, and the poverty stricken slums below ground behind the largest rampart and being the furthest from the castle.

Story[edit | edit source]

Act One[edit | edit source]

Heliodor is the central kingdom within the world of Erdrea. The Hero, after a daring adventure at the Cobblestone Tor, finds out from his mother Amber that he is the reincarnation of the Luminary. She then tells him to search for an audience with King Carnelian, as per Chalky (her late father)'s request to have the Hero head there when he found out his true nature. She also entrusts him the precious pendant, and tells him that Chalky had told her to tell him that showing the King this pendant would confirm his Luminary status. The Luminary leaves his home town of Cobblestone (by horse, or by foot if the player wishes) and heads straight to the kingdom of Heliodor. Once the Luminary reaches the entrance to the castle, he is prevented entry by two guards who initially mock him for a seemingly poor attempt at entry; however, when the Luminary shows them the precious pendant, of the guards leaves (presumably to tell the King). Upon return, the Luminary is let in.

After making his way through the castle (certain NPCs can be heard being disgruntled that their meetings with the King were postponed for this "Luminary" figure), he reaches the throne room, where King Carnelian is there to greet him with some soldiers and his two right-hand men (Hendrik and Jasper). After some talk, the Luminary reveals that he comes from Cobblestone. Jasper takes half of the soldiers and is sent to the mountain village for inspection, before the Luminary is suddenly accused by the King of being the "Darkspawn" that caused the fall of the Dundrasil sixteen years ago. Hendrik, accompanied by the remaining soldiers, throws the Luminary in the castle dungeons. After causing a ruckus, he notices the presence of a mysterious hooded man, who asks what he could have possibly done to be put in the deepest, darkest corner of the dungeon. The man is shocked when the Hero says that he is the Luminary, muttering something about a prophecy, and then offers to help him escape. Shortly afterwards, he takes down a guard bringing him a plate of gruel, and steals the dungeon keys to unlock both their cell doors. The man then takes the sword and charges at another soldier down the corridors, before knocking them unconscious as well. He hands the Luminary back his items (that seem to have been carried by the latter guard) and then leads him to his cell. There, he helps the Luminary down the hole he had dug leading to the sewers. They run away from guards on patrol, and then outrun a black dragon, and then outrun some guards again before they are cornered on a cliff. The two share a look and silently agree to jump off to escape. The hooded man lifts his hood, revealing that his name is Erik, and they jump off together.

They miraculously survive, due to the power of the Luminary, and Erik wakes up in the Heliodorian Foothills. He drags the Luminary over to the nearby church, where the nun there takes care of them both. When the Luminary wakes up, they thank the nun, who mentions that they should be careful returning to Heliodor because there are "two criminals" on the loose, one hailing from the distant mountain village of Cobblestone. They share a glance, thank the nun again and swiftly leave the church before planning their next course of action. Erik figures that Eleven had come from Cobblestone, and comments that he didn't realise anyone even lived down in the rocky south. He then says that, before they return there, he needed to return to Downtown Heliodor to pick up a certain something dear to him. There, Erik tells him that he and Derk (his old partner-in-crime) "aquire[d]" the prized treasure of Heliodor, the Red Orb, and hid it in the giant trash pile in the middle of the town. To his dismay, when Erik attempts to find it again, he finds nothing, and realises that Derk must have stolen it. In order to look for Derk, they go to the inn to ask for the innkeeper, Ruby. But she isn't there, so Erik sends the Luminary to the nearby watchtower to look for someone with red hair come in from the middle-class part of town. After a while, she is seen, and the Hero returns to Erik. They talk with Ruby in the inn, who tells Erik that she knew nothing about him since he opened a fancy shop near the castle. Erik, infuriated, decides that he would confront him. However, there is an obstacle in their path, being that there is a guard blocking access into the main part of the city. The Hero and Erik manage to get past and go into the main city (see Trivia section).

There, they walk on a few tightropes to avoid being spotted by guards, and enter Derk's shop in the wealthy district of the city. Erik attempts to beat him up but Derk reasons with him and he relents. Derk tells them that he had only sold the Orb to help him escape, bribing the guards to not check up on his cell, to which Erik agrees that it was suspicious that no guards had wandered past in the previous few days. Derk then informs them that the Orb had been taken to the Kingsbarrow located in the south-west. Erik and the Hero then finally leave Heliodor through the Heliodorian Foothills - reasoning it was too dangerous to head out the main gates, in case they were spotted - and head to Cobblestone on the way to the Kingsbarrow.

Act Two[edit | edit source]

Heliodor is in ruins due to the Fall of Yggdrasil. Hendrik and the Hero are sent by King Carnelian to the castle to find a way to reclaim the throne and stop the constant monster hordes that attack the Last Bastion, which is a safe place built in the ruins of Cobblestone by the Heliodorians to house people displaced from The Fall. There, Hendrik figures that the usurper should be hiding in the throne room, but the Great Stairway that leads there is collapsed.

While seeking another way up, the two promptly find an Yggdrasil root that shows them memories of Hendrik and Jasper's past. It shows three memories:
  1. The first is of them training together while young, with Jasper frustrated that brute strength won yet again over his tactics. After Hendrik pulls up Jasper from the ground, King Carnelian arrives and introduces them to the newborn Princess Jade, before giving them both Tokens of Fealty.
  2. The second is of them two in either one's bedroom (unspecified), where Hendrik supposes that they form a great duo, with his might and Jasper's wisdom, and that the two of them will be the best knights the kingdom has ever seen. He pledges his allegiance to protect the Princess and the kingdom, but is miffed when he realises Jasper wasn't listening and instead reading a book. When prompted, Jasper raises the book to his face, and tells him about the Shield of Heliodor, seen displayed on the page, that is given only to the finest of knights and is kept in the King's bedchambers. He confesses that he would very much like to see it, and Hendrik punches him playfully, asking how he would manage to sneak in uninvited. Jasper tells him that he happened to see King Carnelian eating a midnight feast in the kitchen through a secret passage behind a cupboard, which he figures must lead to the King's room. After some talk, they agree to meet in the kitchen at midnight.
  3. The third memory is of just Jasper, seemingly an adult knight-in-training. The camera pans up to from the floor to show him clenching his hands and his face looking deep in thought.
    • Note that later when they confront Jasper, this is revealed to be Jasper envious of Hendrik, where Hendrik had come back from his training in Puerto Valor and ignored his extended hand to instead head straight towards the King to be knighted. Jasper is some distance behind the back of the crowd of people surrounding Hendrik and the King.

They use these memories to their advantage, heading to the castle kitchens and pushing the cupboard to reveal the passage to the bedroom. Hendrik mentions, after pushing the cupboard aside, that he never made it to the kitchen on the night mentioned in the memory, for he was caught trying to slip out of his bedroom. He was punished by the King, made to polish all the armour in the castle, and he had a furious argument with Jasper. He reminisces on earlier, easier times, before turning to the Luminary and asks if he will stand beside him for whatever lies ahead.

From there, they head into the ruined throne room, to see Jasper sitting at the throne in a new form: with silvery skin, and black-and-red baroque-style clothing. He makes a great deal about mocking the two of them, making sure to mention that brute strength will no longer win his battles, and venting his frustrations about Hendrik always being given glory and opportunity while leaving him in the shadows. Despite his rousing speech, the bond between Hendrik and the Luminary is not swayed - but before Hendrik can sentence him to death, he turns into his Unbound form: a silver demon with huge wings. He flies off, leaving them alone.

Suddenly, darkness gathers in front of the throne, and Tyriant - Spectral Sentinel of the Purple Orb - materialises in front ot the throne. Hendrik and the Hero take him down, and the Hero retrieves the orb again. Soon after, the purple gloomy darkness in the skies over the general continent dissipates, and the two return to the Last Bastion.

Postgame[edit | edit source]

Heliodor takes center stage of the beginning of the postgame after the Luminary travels to the past to save the world from its potential fate, and replace it with one where the forces of evil never gained foothold in Erdrea. This process began at Yggdrasil, where the Luminary is able to intercept Jasper's ambush before it was too late, weakening him before King Carnelian and Hendrik catch up with the knight. King Carnelian is still possessed by Mordegon, but feigns ignorance to the Jasper's pleas for his master and kills him, blaming all of his actions on Jasper's words of advice. He then invites the party to Heliodor Castle to celebrate the uncovering of Jasper's traitorism. There, the Luminary is first reunited with the people of Cobblestone, who reveal that they had been thrown into the dungeons but otherwise unscathed, all thanks to Hendrik's last-minute interference with the death sentence Jasper had given them.

After the celebration, the party are invited to sleep the night at the castle. When King Carnelian sneaks into the Luminary's room in a attempt to steal the Super Sword of Light, he is forced back by a strange force, and the sword clatters to the ground as he grunts. This wakes up not only the Hero but also his companions (namely Jade, who seems to have been leading the others), who promptly burst into his room. King Carnelian leaves in a flash of darkness, and the party search the castle trying to find him. Various NPCs, like Gemma, mention that she saw darkness heading in the direction of the throne room. When the party gets there, King Carnelian's body collapses, and Mordegon materialises in a shroud of darkness. He reveals that King Carnelian was under his control ever since the day Dundrasil fell, and also that he was responsible for the ruin of Zwaardsrust. Furious, the party and Hendrik engage in battle with him. Once Mordegon is defeated, he is enraged, but spots a dark-coloured tockle at the Luminary's feet and smirks. He tells the Luminary that he is not the only one who has defied the flow of time, and disappears for good. King Carnelian is freed from his mind-control, and properly reunites with Jade.

Unfortunately, because Mordegon has been defeated early this timeline, nobody was able to destroy Erdwin's Lantern as it crashed down. In the middle of an acknowledging ceremony of the Luminary, rumbling is heard from above, and everyone rushes to the balcony, where they see the lantern descend onto the Celestial Sands, and Calasmos is finally properly reborn.

Talking to King Carnelian after the events at Havens Above will show that he wishes to talk to Jade privately. There, he will give her the golden tiara.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • In the English localisation, proper nouns in Heliodor tend to be named after precious stones (e.g. Jasper, Jade, Carnelian, Heliodor)
    • Hendrik is an exception; as revealed in Act Two, he does not come from Heliodor, instead coming from Zwaardsrust.
    • Note that in Cobblestone, a similar naming convention is followed, with less common rocks (e.g. Gemma, Amber, Chalky, Cobblestone)
  • Upon trying to leave Downtown Heliodor for the main city in Act One, there is a guard blocking the path. There are four ways to circumvent this barricade, although the story pushes the player towards the first one.
  1. Erik mentions that he thinks the guard is the one scared of dogs, which the Hero indeed saw in a cutscene when in the watchtower. There is a small girl in the town with a big dog, Bullseye, and offers the Hero to borrow her dog in exchange for two braces of buzzberries (which Bullseye likes to eat) and one vial of holy water (which protects him from monsters when they play outside). When the Hero provides these goods to her, he is forever allowed to temporarily borrow Bullseye (he will follow the Hero around while he is still in Downtown Heliodor). The Hero then can take the dog to the guard, which triggers a cutscene, and the guard is scared off with Bullseye following suit. Note that this method is not viable if the No Shopping Draconian Quest is activated, as there is no way of obtaining holy water outside of purchases (the fortune teller's scam also counts as a transaction).
  2. Simply talking to the guard reveals that he'd be willing to let them pass if the Hero paid him a sum of 2000 gold. Note that this method is also not viable if the No Shopping Draconian Quest is activated, as this counts as a transaction.
  3. Although not necessary, upon talking to Ruby again (after Erik tells the Hero in a cutscene that the guard is scared of dogs), the Hero asks her for ideas on how to get past the guard. She muses that perhaps the guard might have love on his mind, and that a few years ago she might have been able to turn his head herself, being a stunner. This is seen briefly in the cutscene where the Hero observes the people coming in and out of Downtown Heliodor, where the guard is briefly distracted by who seems to be Roxy the dancer, a beautiful woman that works in Downtown Heliodor. Finding the pro hide-and-seeker kid Cammo in the top area of the Downtown Heliodor Map will prompt him asking the player if he was also playing hide-and-seek. If the player selects No, he is frustrated and tells the player to stop acting so suspicious around him, lest he be caught. The interaction is then reset. If the player selects Yes, he is miffed that he was found by a grown-up, and makes a deal with the Hero that if he didn't tell anyone where he was, he would tell him something top-secret. He tells the Hero that when Ruby was younger, she looked exactly like Roxy, and also that their handwriting was exactly the same. He then prompts the player that he's been meaning to get Ruby to write a letter pretending to be Roxy. When the Hero returns to Ruby, he requests her to forge a love letter pretending to be Roxy, which she agrees to. The Hero then can return to the guard and hand him the letter, which reads: "Forgive me for being so forward, but I simply cannot hide my feelings any longer. When I think of you, my heart goes pitter-patter and I swoon with delight. I need to see you. I need to tell you how I feel. I am waiting for you, in the town square. Eternally yours, your Dancing Darling." The guard runs off instantly, and he can later be found in the middle of town waiting for a date that will never come. Note that if the Hero obtains the letter but uses a different method to get to the main city, then text saying "A sudden gust of wind blows the love letter away!" will appear and the Love Letter will disappear from the Key Items section.
  4. A man in the top area of Downtown Heliodor is building a tunnel to the main part of the city, but the flintstone he was using to dig the tunnel had broken. The player is able to give him another flintstone (which can easily be found in a nearby pot) and he can complete the tunnel, where the Hero and Erik are able to crawl through.
