The Merry man is henchman employed by the infamous bumbling bandit Robbin' 'Ood. These monsters are golden recolours of the more common Restless armour in all but one appearance, being the fifth game.
The merry man is the same monster as the Robbin' 'oodlum and Robbin' huddle (Dragon Quest III), with the three being named カンダタこぶん (Kandata kobun) in Japanese. The robbin' 'oodlum name has been used three times where as Robbin huddle name is only used in III to signify that the goons are slightly stronger than the robbin' 'oodlums. All other appearances of the カンダタこぶん use Merry man to better match their boss' Robin Hood pun.
