Gotha is a kingdom in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride.

The castle is surrounded by thick forests and impassable mountains, and is located south of a lake which empties into the ocean. Due to its extreme isolation, Battenburg is the only nearby settlement and the mountain town boasts an incredible view of the kingdom.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride[edit | edit source]

Gotha is the home town of King Pankraz, and therefore the birthplace of The Hero as well. It is first shown in the opening cutscene of the game where Pankraz is anxiously waiting for the birth of his son, and is where the player names the Hero. During the second generation of the game, the Hero returns to Gotha and claims the throne from his steward uncle to the joy of the citizens, but also to the quiet frustration of the chancellor, who plays coy and insists that the Hero must first prove himself before taking the throne.

Each King of Gotha must pass a trial in the nearby Riteof Passage to prove their worth before they are allowed to ascend the throne. Simultaneous to this challenge is that the Hero's wife has entered the final stages of her pregnancy and will give birth shortly, preventing her from accompanying her husband. The Hero succeeds in the trail in spite of a would-be assassination attempt, and returns to Gotha to find that he is the proud father of twins. This sends the citizens of Gotha into a celebratory frenzy and clamor for a night of revelry. The food and drinks were laden with sedatives, however, and the Hero awakens after sensing something is wrong and discovered that monsters have kidnapped his wife. Thankfully, the nursemaid was taking care of the newborns and did not sample the poisoned food, hiding the infants under the bed and sparing them their mother's fate. She warns the Hero that this happened during the night of his own birth, and he sets out to recover his wife.

After the petrification of the Hero and his wife at Knightmare Towers and the death of the traitorous chancellor, the Hero's uncle takes control of the throne once again for eight years, relinquishing it once the twins have revived their father. The children, Sancho, and Tuppence the guardsman then join the Hero as he sets outs to recover his wife and rid the world of the order of Zugzwang once and for all. Gotha thus becomes the base of operations for the player in the third generation, with Monty, Patty, and Rainbow's End gold bank setting up shop in second floor.
