The Pteranodon is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest series, first appearing in Dragon Quest IV. It is based on the Rhamphorhynchus genus of pterosaurs from the late Jurassic era.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Pteranodons are flying reptiles distinguished by their large wings, fang-filled beaks, and long tails. Ironically enough, the name Pteranodon means "toothless wing" in Ancient Greek. They have white feathered skin, yellow beaks, and the leathery membrane that make up their wings are grey. These prehistoric fliers attack from the skies and can char enemies with their fire magic, thankfully being limited by their low MP pools. The pteranodon has been a member of both the Bird family and the Dragon family, depending on the game. After their original appearance, the pterosaurs only appeared regularly in spinoff games in the series, eventually returning in X after 22 years.

Dragon Quest X [edit | edit source]

Pteranodons appeared in the game starting with Version 1.0. They have gained the ability to cast Bang since Sizz was not available at the beginning of the game. A trio of pteranodons are faced as bosses in the quest "Coda for Tomorrow" alongside a Great Argon lizard in Version 2.3. They are much stronger than normal, gaining the ability to cast Kaboom and Oomph and breathe out Freezing Blizzard. Vicious pteranodons also began appearing as enemies in Version 5.0 of the game, also casting Kaboom, though it will also go haywire, albeit rarely.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • In an especially close bit of scientific accuracy, Akira Toriyama added teeth to the Pteranodon's beak. These were exclusive to the Rhamphorhynchus genus, and not present in other pterosaurs.
