Anyone in who is/has been a Legend (via Rank 8 of the Hero class) can use Kazapple. Unlike Dragon Quest IV, all characters can use Kazapple because they all gain MP. Kazapple returns to the series after a 17 year absence, and is learned by the Hero as per tradition. Rather than requiring MP as before, the spell needs all four casters to be in the zone, and the Hero must know Kazap. The power is dependent on the sum of the party's magical might. The spell starts out dealing 690~750 lightning damage to all foes, and starts increasing in power once the sum of the participant's magical might reaches 527, peaking at dealing 1410~1470 damage when the total magical might of the users reaches 1986.
Kazapple has the same parameters as in the previous two games.
* The numbers 527 and 1986 are a clever reference to the publishing date of the quest that started it all: May twenty-seventh, 1986.

In the English version, Kazapple instead refers to a pep power usable by the Hero, Jade, and Rab, which requires the Hero to know Kazap and for Jade to know Lightning Storm, with the spell formerly known as Kazapple is instead referred to as Kazapstrophe. The three-person pep power starts out dealing 286~346 lightning damage to all enemies, with the damage starting to increase once the sum of the three's Magical Might reaches 380, and capping at 594~654 once it reaches 975. In addition, it has a 20% chance to either reduce the target's lightning resistance by 25% or paralyze them.

Kazapple is a spell in the Dragon Quest series that delivers the fury of the Gods unto the player's enemies. The finer details of the spell vary between titles, but it is always the strongest Lightning-element ability in every game it appears in.

Localization history[edit | edit source]

Alongside the games in which Jigodein appeared as Kazapple (mostly the Monsters series), there were also other games (mostly the numbered games) that featured the other spell Minadein translated as Kazapple as well. For Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, as both are present, in order to prevent a situation where two spells are called the same, Minadein was renamed to Kazapstrophe. See Kazapstrophe for the spell that refers to Minadein.

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3[edit | edit source]

Kazapple has the same parameters as in the previous two games.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[edit | edit source]

Kazapple costs 61 MP and is learned via the Greygnarl, Leading Light, Lord of the Dragovians, Murdaw, Perfect Speller, Polariser, Sovereign, Strong Speller, Zap Virtuoso talents. It has a base power of 260 and will deal an average of 800 damage at 3,999 wisdom.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

 • Kazapple appeared in a preview image seen in issue 36 of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine's 1989 edition, where it was shown dealing 520 damage to a monster. This higher voltage output was likely lowered during the development of IV for balancing the end-game's difficulty.
