When the Hero 3 and Party 3 defeated the Orochi in her lair, she dropped the Orochi sword from her tail and retreats through a portal to Pimiko's Palace in Jipang. Stepping through the portal, the player sees Pimiko severely wounded and being tended to by a panicking handmaiden. When it became clear that the Orochi was pretending to be Pimiko, the monster telepathically spoke to the Hero 3 and struck a bargain: keep quiet about her secret and allow her to continue gorging herself on maidens, and she will spare the lives of the Party 3.

Orochi appears as an A-rank monster of the Dragon family and can be unlocked by collecting Orochi Marks from the Cave of Trials. She reprises her role in the original Dragon Quest III event, mistaking Mindini for a sacrifice and is fought by Majellan and the party. After her defeat, she spits Mindini farther into Manoza. She is also fought in Armful's Battle Road in Chapters 6 and 7, the former of which she attacks Armful for using a female Walking corpse as a human maiden and the latter for workout training after getting chubby from eating maidens. She helps get Armful back into Baramos (and indirectly) Zoma's army after she is defeated the first time.

The Orochi is a monster and villain in Dragon Quest III and a servant of Baramos. She has gone on to appear in the Monsters series of games and many spinoffs, both as a boss and a recruitable monster.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

The design of Orochi is the one of an enormous, quadrupedal five-headed dragon that is covered in green scales and has a long tail. At the top of each head there are bluish-purple coloured crests that stem from the front of the head to the base of the neck. In each limb there are four fingers that end up in white, sharp claws. It has red eyes with no pupils.

Appearences[edit | edit source]

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation[edit | edit source]

Orochi masquerades as Pimiko–the queen of Jipang, and uses the disguise to create a despicable ruse: Pimiko has reached a compromise with "Orochi", agreeing that if the monster is given sacrifices of young girls at regular intervals then she will not attack the village directly.

When the party defeats the Orochi in her lair, she dropped the Orochi's sword from her tail and retreats through a portal to Pimiko's Palace in Jipang. Stepping through the portal, the player sees Pimiko severely wounded and being tended to by a panicking handmaiden. When it became clear that the Orochi was pretending to be Pimiko, the monster telepathically spoke to the Hero and struck a bargain: keep quiet about her secret and allow her to continue gorging herself on maidens, and she will spare the lives of the party.

Orochi is gravely injured after the first battle and is in no position to threaten anyone: the party will battle her a second time, finally being able to defeat her and freeing the people of Jipang.

Orochi appears as the boss of the 100 Pals Room Gate, its speech and surroundings an allusion to its appearance in Dragon Quest III. Once Terry defeats it in battle, it will go on a rampage due to its being upset about losing. Its massive build and weight causes the bit of land Terry is standing on to start to give way, putting him in danger. Just in time, a mysterious cloaked swordsman (who is actually Terry's future self) arrives on the scene and finishes Orochi off, saving Terry's life. This entire scene will only occur if Terry defeats Orochi before clearing the Gate of Reflection.

Dragon Quest Walk[edit | edit source]

Orochi appeared in Chapter 2 of the Dragon Quest III event held from March to May 2020, eventually appearing as a powerful monster in various places.

Dragon Quest Tact[edit | edit source]

Orochi is an A-rank monster of the Dragon family, first appearing in the original Dragon Quest III event as a boss. She can be unlocked by collecting Orochi Marks from the Cave of Trials. During the Dragon Quest III event, mistaking Mindini for a sacrifice and is fought by Majellan and the party.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

 • Orochi is revealed to be female by speaking to NPCs in Dragon Quest III.
 • If the Hero does not chase Orochi through the portal upon her initial defeat (instead leaving the cave), she will be standing in the same spot later, forcing the player to battle her again. She does not drop the Orochi sword more than once, though.
 • The dreadful beast and the events surrounding Jipang and the arrival of the Hero are based on the Japanese legend of the Yamata no Orochi. Yamato no Orochi is an eight-headed and eight-tailed dragon who demands human sacrifices, and who is slain by the thunder god Susanō no Mikoto. The Orochi sword is likewise a reference to the Kusanagi, a sword found within the body of Orochi.
