Hyunckel is a major character in Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai. A young man that was raised by monsters, he mistakenly believes that the hero Avan killed his adoptive father and joins the Dark Army as the leader of the Undead Legion. After battling with Dai, Hyunckel finds out the truth and decides to join him and his companions.

Appearance

Hyunckel is a young man with light skin and an athletic, muscular build with shaggy white hair. As the leader of the Undead Legion, he wore a simple outfit of black form-fitting clothing, a light beige kilt and leather boots, cloth wraps around his hands, and a long white cloak that covers most of his body. His Dark Armour, granted to him by the Demon King Vearn, is silver and maroon-colored with spiked pauldrons and the design of a skeletal visage on the front of his breastplate and faulds. He is able to summon it instantaneously from his Dark Armour Blade with the incantation, "Amdo", unraveling itself from the sword's scabbard. The sword converts itself into his helmet, which only reveals his eyes and features the two arrows from its crossguard that point outwards and a long metallic plume. The armour is said to be powerful enough to deflect any and all attack magic.

As one of the Disciples of Avan, Hyunckel wears a sleeveless purple tunic and trousers, white leather boots with grey straps, and the same long white cloak as before.

Story

The armies of the Dark Lord Hadlar razed many towns and villages. Hyunckel was found as a baby in one of the villages that was attacked by the Dark Army and was raised by General Bartos as his adoptive son. Bartos was only allowed to do so since he was the strongest knight in the Dark Lord's army. He named the boy Hyunckel after a legendary swordsman who once ruled the Demon World. The boy was raised to be kindhearted by Bartos and he treated the other monsters as his family. Eventually, the hero Avan defeated Hadlar, causing the death of his adoptive father and many other monsters. Avan comes across the young man and decides to take him as the first of his Disciples, believing that he was a boy that had been kidnapped by the monsters. However, unbeknownst to him, Hyunckel was biding his time to seek revenge on Avan for his father's death. He devised the Bloody Scryde technique in secret and planned to use it against Avan on the day of his graduation as a Disciple. Avan was one step ahead of the boy and was able to harmlessly redirect the attack, hurling Hyunckel into the nearby river in an act of self-defence.

Dragon Quest of the Stars

Hyunckel appears as a boss in his Dark Armour form in the Japanese version of the game. The player can acquire pieces of equipment in order to dress like him.

Dragon Quest Walk

Hyunckel appears as a boss in Chapter 5 of The Adventure of Dai event held in the game in December 2020, as well as a powerful enemy version after clearing Chapter 5, Episode 4. He attacks using skills such as Multislash and Falcon Slash and dons his Dark Armour once his HP drops below 70%. The player can also acquire both Hyunckel's Dark Armour Blade and his Dark Armour in order to dress like him. After completing Chapter 6 of the event quests, both him and Crocodine are able to join the player as companion characters.

Dragon Quest Tact

Hyunckel appears as a S-rank member of the Hero family as part of the limited The First Adventure of Dai event on his own banner alongside Popp. He appears as a boss in the Dark Swordsman Hyunckel and All Out Battle! Dark Commander Hadlar stages and he can participate in Maam's Battle Road as a party member. Hyunckel also appears as a guest in various levels of the events, becoming stronger as the player collects Hyunckel Friendship Stones.

He later appears wielding the Dark Armour Spear with its armour as Dark Armour Spear Hyunckel who is an S-rank member of the Hero family as part of the limited The Second Adventure of Dai event, where he can be recruited during the event's story. He will join the player in Chapter 2 Episode 2: The Landing of Sovereign Rock Castle of the event quests and he can be fully awakened by collecting Dark Armour Spear Hyunckel Crystals from clearing the Master of Darkness Against His Pupil stages on any level of difficulty. Dark Armour Spear Hyunckel also stars in his own Battle Road.

Hyunckel appeared both as a boss and a playable character in the game. He is a Warrior and depending on which version of him is selected, he either wielded swords or spears. Hyunckel joined the party in his Dark Armour Blade form after completing Episode 13 - Avan's Avengers of Bonding Journey. Other versions of him were unlockable via timed events or by exchanging Seer Candles at Merle's Mystic Fortunes shop.
