Localization History
Prior to the localization of IX, Kafrizzle was the English equivalent of the the メラゾーマ (Merazoma) spell. The Kafrizzle seen in IX and later numbered titles refers to the spell メラガイアー (Meragaia), as the Japanese version of the ninth game added several of the fourth-tier spells from Joker into the main series. Because the English root word of Frizz could not be further expanded upon as the Japanese mera was, the localization team instead opted to keep the Kafrizzle term for the most powerful fireball spell and assign the English name Kafrizz to Merazoma.
The spell メラゾーマ Merazōma was originally localised as Kafrizzle, as it was the highest-tier spell of that line at one point. However, with later games, they added a higher-tier メラガイアー Meragaiā, which ended up getting that naming instead.
As such, refer to Kafrizz for games where it was about Merazōma.

Kafrizzle is a recurring offensive spell in the Dragon Quest series.

Kafrizzle is the most powerful fireball spell and is significantly stronger than Frizz, Frizzle, & Kafrizz. It cremates a single enemy with a miniature sun.

Localization History[edit | edit source]

The spell メラゾーマ Merazōma was originally localised as Kafrizzle, as it was the highest-tier spell of that line at one point. However, with later games, they added a higher-tier メラガイアー Meragaiā, which ended up getting that naming instead. As such, refer to Kafrizz for games where it was about Merazōma. (Also see Kafrizz)

Appearances[edit | edit source]

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies[edit | edit source]

Learned by Mages at Level 64. Cremates a single enemy with an enormous fireball for 45 MP, dealing 292~315 base damage. Once the caster's Magical Might reaches 480, the spell will begin to reach it's cap of 577~623.

Dragon Quest X [edit | edit source]

Magicians learn Kafrizzle after investing 150 points into their Spellcraft skill tree. It costs 18 MP and has a casting time of 65 seconds with a range of 15 meters. The initial damage range is 457~503, with the calculation being (Magical Might - 416) x 450/583 + 457~503 for a cap of 907~953. Thanks to buff skills and spells, the caster's Magical Might can be raised even higher and the calculation becomes (Magical Might - 999) /3 + 907~953 for a true maximum of 1,074~1,120 at 1,500 Magical Might.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[edit | edit source]

Veronica will learn to cast Kafrizzle upon mastering her Spellcraft skill tree. It costs an obscene 52 MP but hits for an immense 366~398 damage before reaching a maximum of 748~780 when her Magical Might rises to 900.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker[edit | edit source]

Kafrizzle is an expensive spell at 30 MP, but hits hard for 284~300 base damage. Once the monster's Wisdom trumps 504, it will grow in power until it reaches 441~457 at 999 Wisdom. It is learned from:

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2[edit | edit source]

Kafrizzle deals 277~303 base damage and will hit for a maximum of 438~471. It can be learned from all the skills it could be in the previous game, as well as from Frizz & Sizz III for 65 points or from Leonyx for 81 points.

Terry's Wonderland 3D & Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key[edit | edit source]

Kafrizzle costs 32 MP and has a base range of 256~283 damage. Once the caster's Wisdom reaches 3,999 it will deal 893~987 damage.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3[edit | edit source]

Kafrizzle has the same cost and damage range as in the prior two games.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince[edit | edit source]

Kafrizzle costs 32 MP and is learned via the Aamon, Bishop Ladja, Fallen Angel Corvus, Frizz Virtuoso, Impactor, Nelgel the Netherfiend, Nimzo, Perfect Speller, and Rhapthorne talents. It has a base power of 340 and will deal an average of 990 damage once the caster's wisdom reaches 3,999.

Dragon Quest of the Stars[edit | edit source]

Kafrizzle was one of the few S-rank spells available in the Global version of the game.
