Great green goons that love to smack and smash anything and everything with their clobbering clubs. Goofily garbed in garish dark magenta fluffy outfits, they're not to be underestimated in battle despite their foolish fashion sense. They often make deadly desperate attacks that can down an adventurer with their great spiked clubs. Sometimes they'll attempt to Shove a single enemy right out of battle and out of action.
In Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince and in the HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest III, boss troll's pink lips were changed into green lips, likely to avoid the resemblance of a blackface.
A boss troll is acting as the King of Manoza when the Hero and party first arrives there. By using the Ra's Mirror, the Hero is able to reveal the impostor and fight the boss troll.

The Boss troll's role in the story is the same, though it's revealed to be a servant of Baramos, confirming a detail from the novel, CD Theater, and item story. As with all boss monsters, the false king burns through status ailments one turn faster than a plebeian beast would.

Notable changes in the remake
A pair of boss trolls are faced at the end of the optional Troll Maze dungeon, preparing to cook the Chancellor of Argonia, his wife, and their maid. The party will interrupt them in the middle of their preparations and face them in battle. These boss trolls have nearly double the amount of HP as those faced in regular encounters, though it should not be a difficult encounter.

The boss Troll is a four-star member of the Demon family with a weight of 5. Its in-game description reads "It's a chubby demon, but it gets angry when told that."

Boss troll appears as a A-rank monster of the Demon family as part of the original Dragon Quest III event, appearing alongside Zoma on his banner. From Version 4.0 onward, he could be scouted normally from any banner, including the Regular SP Scout.
The boss troll can be faced as a boss in Chapter 3, Episode 4: The King(?) of Manoza of the event quests. He can participate in the Skelegon's Battle Road as a party member.
